Despite all the gender inclusion advocacy, Youths in Agrifood Systems face myrHere are five ways to support youth in the agrifood system:

1. Access to Finance and Micro-loans:
Financial institutions can develop tailored loan products with lower interest rates, simplified application processes, and flexible repayment schedules specifically for young farmers. This helps them overcome the initial capital barriers required to start and scale agrifood businesses, such as purchasing seeds, equipment, and livestock, or investing in new technology

2. Modern Agricultural Training and Mentorship:
Implementing practical training programs that blend traditional farming with modern, sustainable techniques is crucial. This includes digital agriculture, climate-smart practices, and value-add processing. Connecting young agripreneurs with experienced mentors provides invaluable guidance, business advice, and networks that are critical for long-term success.

3. Enabling Market Access and Fair Pricing:
Governments and private organizations can create dedicated market places and support platforms that help young farmers reach larger markets directly. Assisting them with branding, packaging, quality control, and linking them with fair-trade agreements ensures they receive a reliable, competitive price for their produce, making farming a viable career.

4. Supportive Policy and Land Tenure Reform:
Governments must create and enforce policies that facilitate access to land for young people, simplifying leasing procedures and protecting tenure rights.

Key Weather Points:
Rainfall Peak: The wettest period is expected to be on Friday and Saturday, with significant rainfall and limited sun.

Wettest Day: Saturday, August 29th, is looking to be the wettest day with the highest rainfall (32.0 mm) and the lowest sunshine duration.

Temperature: Temperatures will remain warm, with maximums between 27°C and 31°C, and minimums from 22°C to 23°C.

Total Rainfall: Total rain for the period is estimated around 95.3 mm!

Key Agricultural Advisories:
🚜 Field Operations: Plan carefully! Heavy rain, especially from Friday to Sunday, could disrupt your field work. Take advantage of available dry periods early in the week.

Soil Moisture: Expect high soil moisture! Make sure you maintain good drainage in your fields to prevent waterlogging.

Crop Health: High moisture means an increased risk of fungal disease. Make sure you increase regular inspections of your crops!

Harvesting & Drying: Time your harvesting activities carefully. We highly recommend using covered or improved drying facilities.

Article XXIV: OF SPEAKING IN THE CONGREGATION IN SUCH A TONGUE AS THE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND

It is against the Bible and against how the early Christians worshipped to conduct church prayers or give Communion in a language that the people can not understand.

I was engaged in a debate with fellow extension agents in course of the week on the yield potential of local cassava varieties compared with improved varieties.

The Local varieties have been with us for all time. They have incredible adaptability and reflect knowledge and research of the past.

Over the years, with the effect of climate change, these local varieties have grossly underperformed. This has necessitated the need for intense research by the National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for improved varieties of cassava to cope with climate change and also improve yield.

This research has led to several varieties of Cassava being introduced, such as ; ; ; ; ; etc.

These varieties are well adapted to our environment, are disease resistant, resilient to climate change issues, has quick maturity period and has higher yield.

Unfortunately, due to poor service delivery in Nigeria, adoption of these new varieties among local smallholder farmers is still relatively low.

So how are we going to attain food security when farmers don't have access to improved stem cuttings? Therefore the argument shouldn't be about the yield potential of local/improved cassava varieties for food security. The argument should be on how to strengthen services so as to make knowledge of agricultural innovation such as improved available to local smallholder farmers to compliment the efforts of the research institutes.

Majority of the food we eat everyday is done by people we may never get to see or know.

But their resilience is often underappreciated.

Here is a woman processing her cassava into Garri. In a rare moment of comradeship, I shared with her how valuable her services are to the sustainability in the Agrifood system, a concept she has never heard or may never understand but to whom she is fully integral to.

Let us support them with trainings, funding, market access and processing/storage structures. That is the only way we can attain food security.
