🌍 HISTORIC WIN: UN VOTES TO CORRECT THE MAP – AFRICA’S TRUE SIZE FINALLY RECOGNIZED
The UN General Assembly just voted 164-1 to promote equal-area maps like Equal Earth over the outdated Mercator projection. Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland, yet Mercator has long shrunk the continent while inflating Europe and North America. This isn’t just geography, it’s about perception, power, and justice.
Shame on the United States for casting the sole “no” vote, dismissing a push for accurate representation as “ideological.” Standing alone against 164 nations signals resistance to updating a colonial-era visual hierarchy that has minimized the Global South for centuries.
Adopting a truer map carries real political weight: it challenges Eurocentric worldviews in education, media, and diplomacy, fostering greater respect for Africa’s scale and agency. Economically, it can shift how investors, policymakers, and aid agencies view the continent’s vast resources, infrastructure needs, and market potential, helping correct underestimation that has held back opportunity.
Benefits ripple outward. For Africa: restored dignity, stronger narrative control, and a foundation for fairer global engagement.
