Basil Wolverton was an American comic artist and illustrator, known as the godfather of all "gross-out comedy" cartoonists. His unforgettable depictions of wacky, grotesque and ugly people gained him a strong cult following. After starting his career drawing humorous comic features like 'Powerhouse Pepper' (1942-1952), he visualized the previously invisible character Lena Hyena for Al Capp's 'Li'l Abner' comic, and designed the hideous woman on the front page of Mad Magazine's 11th issue, arguably the most iconic cover in its history. Apart from humor, Wolverton proved his versatility by creating chilling horror tales for comic books published by Atlas Comics (nowadays Marvel) and Morse. Later in his career, he reinvented himself as a biblical illustrator, drawing chapters of The Old Testament ('The Bible Story', 1958-1972). Although a polarizing artist, Basil Wolverton's highly original, unique and instantly recognizable style still influences artists today. Read more about him, here:

A giant of comics has passed away, with her absence darkening our world: Marjane Satrapi, creator of the acclaimed 'Persepolis'. :( (2000-2003), a chronicle of her life in Iran under the regime of the Shah, Khomeini and Khamenei, simultaneously reflecting on the spirit and rebellion of ordinary Iranian people. Over the years, 'Persepolis' has won several awards, was translated in many languages and adapted into an animated film, but also banned in Iran, Lebanon and some U.S. school districts. In addition, Satrapi drew two more modest graphic novels, 'Embroideres' ('Broderies', 2003) and 'Poulet Aux Prunes' ('Chicken With Plums', 2004), covering memories of her relatives. A vocal political-social commentator, Satrapi frequently made headlines with her belligerent criticism of religious fundamentalism, racism, war, nationalism and the prejudices regarding women. From the late 2000s, Satrapi was mostly active as a director of live-action films, some being adaptations of her own comics. Read more about the magnificent Satrapi in our completely revised, updated and expanded biography, here:

Past Monday (1 May) Gerald Scarfe celebrated his 90th birthday :). Scarfe is a world renowned British political cartoonist and caricaturist. He's instantly recognizable for his swift, pointy linework and often monstrous-looking caricatures of politicians. In 1966, he was the first cartoonist since the Victorian era to openly portray and ridicule the British monarch. His notability among the general public rose thanks to his work for Pink Floyd, particularly their cult movie 'Pink Floyd: The Wall' (1982), which featured his animated sequences. Fans of British comedy might recognize his style from the opening credits of the sitcom 'Yes Minister' (1980-1984) and its follow-up 'Yes, Prime Minister' (1986-1988). Last but not least, he designed the graphic look of the Walt Disney film 'Hercules' (1997). Read more about him here:

In May 1976, half a century ago, the first 'American Splendor' by Harvey Pekar was published. :) As a celebration we present our completely updated and revised biography about this legendary comics writer. Pekar was a US file clerk with an additional career as jazz critic and comic writer, widely renowned for his autobiographical slice-of-life comic series 'American Splendor' (1976-2010). The books offered fresh inspiration to the emerging alternative comic scene by focusing on anecdotal short stories about ordinary people. Small, relatable moments of touching humanity and existential wonder, drawn by a variety of artists, 'American Splendor' often centered on or around Pekar himself, shown as a complex, opinionated man with his fair share of problems and vices. 'American Splendor' gained a cult following, which increased after Pekar's controversial appearances on the talk show 'Late Night with David Letterman', where he amused and later outraged the host with his non-conformist attitude and criticism of the network and their business partner General Electric. In 2003, 'American Splendor' was adapted into a Hollywood biopic. In addition, Pekar released several comics and graphic novels about a variety of topics like the Vietnam War ('Unsung Hero', 2003), Jewishness ('Yiddishkeit', 2011), Israel ('Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me', 2012), his hometown ('Harvey Pekar's Cleveland', 2012), and short biopics about jazz musicians and regular people who fascinated him. Another comic artist who recently turned 90 (!): Stan Mack, one of the pioneers of autobiographical slice-of-life comics. :) Through his series 'Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies' (1974-1995) in The Village Voice, 'Stan Mack's Out-takes' (1981-1992?) in Adweek, 'Scenes From Real Life' (1978) in Esquire, 'Stan Mack's True Tales' (1995-1997) in Modern Maturity, 'Dispatches' (late 1990s, early 2000s) in The New York Times and 'Stan Mack's Real Lives' (2021-2022) on whowhatwhyorg , he documented conversations with real-life ordinary people from very different backgrounds at a variety of events and other locations. Apart from a fascinating look at colorful and sometimes eccentric individuals, these comics are also a time capsule of New York's many endeavors and events from the 1970s down to the 2020s. Earlier in his career, Mack drew the surreal gag comic 'Mule's Diner' (1972-1979) in National Lampoon. In the 21st century, he published several graphic novels, the first one about his late partner's terminal cancer, 'Janet & Me: An Illustrated Story of Love and Loss' (2000), making him one of the pioneers of the graphic medicine genre. He later delved into history with 'The Story of the Jews: a 4,000-Year Adventure' (2008), chronicling the Jewish people from biblical times to the present, and 'Revolting Rebels' (2023), looking at the American War of Independence. Even at an advanced age, Mack has remained active as a webcomic artist and book illustrator. Several of his illustrated books have also made use of the comic strip format. Jack King was an American animated film director, best remembered for his extensive work for the Walt Disney Studios. Between 1929 and 1933 and again from 1936 to 1948, he worked on various shorts for the studio, several starring Mickey Mouse and later predominantly featuring Donald Duck. King also contributed to the 'Silly Symphonies' series and some of Disney's animated features. Between 1933 and 1936, King briefly worked for Warner Brothers' animation department. In comics, his career was brief: for a few weeks in 1930, King did some filler work on the 'Mickey Mouse' newspaper comic. Read more about him, here:

Last Friday (15 May), we had another birthday boy: Ralph Steadman , illustrator of 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', celebrated his 90th (!) anniversary. :) The house illustrator of cult writer Hunter S. Thompson, Steadman is widely regarded as the "godfather of gonzo art." His raw, expressive and splashy art has livened up pages of many newspapers and magazines, most notably Rolling Stone. Steadman was also active as an editorial cartoonist for The New Statesman and other papers. Read more about Steadman, here.

Ralph Steadman is a Welsh graphic artist, cartoonist and painter, most famous for illustrating the works of Hunter S. Thompson, including the writer's signature cult novel 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' (1971). Much like Thompson is regarded as the inventor of "gonzo...
