Roberta Gregory is an American cartoonist, best-known for her humorous cult comic 'Bitchy Bitch' (1990- ), about a highly irritable, malicious female office employee and her colorful colleagues and relatives. Gregory started out in the feminist and LGBTQ comics press, writing history as one of the very first female artists to publish her own independent comic book, 'Dynamite Damsels' (1976). Her signature series 'Bitchy Bitch' became the flagship of her own long-running comic book series 'Naughty Bits' (1991-2004). The stories about the crabby Bitchy and her ongoing misery regarding work, her mother, health and her s*x life, struck a chord with many readers who found it both hilarious and recognizable. Still, Gregory sometimes didn't shy away from challenging her audience with obscene but true-to-life imagery, like s*x scenes and being on one's period, as well as dark and confrontational themes, like homophobia, religious fundamentalism, the anti-abortion movement and hostilities towards other gender types. Throughout her career, Roberta Gregory showcased her versatility by drawing fantasy stories ('Winging It', 1988, 1999), humor comics ('Sheila and the Unicorn', 1988), erotic relationship drama ('Artistic Licentiousness', 1991, 1994, 1997), political satire (her 'Sheep' cartoons since 1988), biopics and autobiographical, diary-style comics ('True Cat Toons', 2006- ). 10 years ago, today, the great Jack Davis passed away (27 July), best-known as a long-running contributor to Mad Magazine. He was one of the pioneers during its first four years (1952-1956), when Mad was still a comic book under the editorship of Harvey Kurtzman. Davis drew various parody comics, articles and was the first artist to illustrate the long-running feature 'Scenes We'd Like To See' (1955). The tireless artist also designed several of Mad's fake advertisements, as well as real-life ads to promote subscriptions. Although Davis left Mad in 1956, he returned in 1965. Under new editorship of Al Feldstein and William M. Gaines, he kept contributing comics and other artwork for Mad until 1997. Davis also contributed to E.C. Comics' groundbreaking "New Trend" line of horror, war and suspense comic books. Together with Mad writer Nick Meglin, he created the sports gag comic 'Super Fan' (1970-1974) in the monthly American football magazine Pro Quarterback. Davis is renowned for his wild, energetic and chaotic style, which influenced numerous creators of humor comics. His drawings explode with movement. Today (17 July) would've been Hermanns birthday, but he passed away last March. :( As a tribute we present his completely updated and expanded Lambiek biography. Hermann was a Belgian comic artist, ranking as one of the foremost and most influential creators of adult comics in Europe. He gained his earliest fame in Tintin magazine with the nautical adventure comic 'Bernard Prince' (1965-1980), scripted by Greg, and as the first artist of Jean-Luc Vernal's 'Jugurtha' (1967-1970), a series set in ancient Numidia. With Greg, he also made the groundbreaking western series 'Comanche' (1969-1982), which shocked Tintin's audience with its bloodshed and violence. In this series, Hermann began showcasing his trademark gritty, cynical, hard-boiled style. After leaving Tintin, he found his true form as a solo creator with the post-apocalyptic series 'Jeremiah' (1979-2026), starring the anti-heroes Jeremiah and Kurdy Malloy in a bleak, depraved world. His second solo series was the equally raw medieval saga 'Les Tours de Bois-Maury' (1984-1994) and its spin-off 'Bois-Maury' (1998-2021). On occasion, Hermann surprised audiences with notable breaks in style, such as his dream-influenced children's fantasy comic 'Nic' (script by Philippe Vandooren, 1980-1983) in Spirou magazine, or with stand-alone graphic novels that reflected his social engagement, like 'Sarajevo-Tango' (1995). Later in life, Hermann often collaborated with his son Yves H. as scriptwriter, resulting in a several graphic novels and the western series 'Dust' (2017-2023). Read more about him, here:
