Many thanks to fellow bookseller Anne of Bay Used Books for reminding us about our page.

We got locked out of our page in 2021 and are happy to find we can now log in after a 4 year hiatus.

Dear all,

We've been locked out of this page for several months, so apologies to all of you who messaged us and received no reply.

We are open on appointment from 12:00 to 16:00, provided customers wear facemasks as well as make sure there are no more than two customers per floor.

The fastest way to make an appointment is to call us during opening hours at our rather mnemonically friendly phone number: 020-6266-266.

And if you wish to sell/trade your books, feel free to use our contact form on the updated website: https://www.bookexchange.nl/

Stay safe and stay healthy!

Please note, our opening hours will be 12:00 to 16:00 every day, until further notice.

Stay safe, people. =)

Most of our books average around 5.00 to 7.50 euro in re-sell price. But every now and then, you come across a book you've no idea how to price. One such case is this old (1798) 3-piece set of Sterne's two best-known works: Tristram Shandy & Sentimental Journey. Rather than let it sit around and age even more, we've taken a punt & decided to put it on auction site called Catawiki.

There's no reserve price on the set, & shipping is free for NL, so if you're lucky & looking for a cheeky avant-garde examples of pre-18th Century stream of consciousness literature, see if you can't sn**ch it for a cool 30 euro or so.

Michael Löwy, sociologist, philosopher, and prolific writer will deliver a public talk this Friday at Amsterdam's IIRE. Held on the occasion of the 80th-year anniversary of the Fourth International, the evening will revolve around the question of revolutionary activism and the role of an international in 2018.

Löwy has written on a wide-range of subjects on Marxist theory and practice, from Marxist history to the sociology of religion, from romantic anti-capitalism (like the book shown below) to ecosocialism. He is emeritus research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research and member of Nouveau Parti Anticapitaliste.

The Fourth International is an ecosocialist organisation, present in 40 countries, with 55 organisations. It was founded 1938 after more than a decade of losses to the gathering tide, and despotism, of Soviet bureaucracy, which had by then been consolidated as an instrument of Soviet nationalist diplomacy.

Decorated as finely as it was made, this edition of Dumas' classic adventure story is "flexi bound," which mimics the durability of most hardback titles, without the added weight. The embossed leather-like boards and floral end papers give it a nice finishing touch for and book gift (for someone else or for yourself).

Here's a curious collection of words from UK dialects that have long since faded into disuse:

"Skype (noun). Scotland.
A mean, worthless fellow; a lean person of disagreeable manner and temper. From Selkirkshire: 'If he durst I would claw the puppy hide of him! He is as great a skype as I know of.'

Novels (noun). Scotland.
News, tidings. This sense of the noun was widespread in Britain 200 years before it came to be used in the modern sense of a long fictional prose narrative, and it survived in some parts of the country.'"

"If you looked hard you could just make out the schoolboy from the photographs on the windowsill. But he was very different now. The rosy flush had gone, the hair was darker and thinner, the flesh on the cheeks and throat had thickened. It was a face in slow decay, tumbling and sliding down from its bones, spouting veins and moles and blemishes. You could see an old man in it already. . ."

First time we see this copy of Sherlock Holmes: it's a large, leather-bound collection of all the Holmes stories, complete with gilted page edges, plaid paste downs (the paper you see on the insides of the front and back boards), and a silken page marker (so you don't need to dog-ear the pages!)
