Modern Classics With A Whole Lotta Citra!

We’re turning back the clock a little with some fresh classics, IPAs and DIPAs which are as good today as when they first came out, and all feature Citra - one of the hops that the haze-craze couldn’t have lived without. Or do they???

We say that they’re all hitting hard with Citra - but then there’s Heady Topper. One of the greatest and most celebrated hazy DIPAs ever brewed, and to this day the recipe is a well kept secret. An open debate that has raged for years - what is your best guess on the hop bill?

Otherwise - you’re getting a whole lot of grapefruit, mango, passionfruit and pith! These beers are still hitting that great balance of bittersweet that we love so much, and ride that line between the IBU wars and the Haze Craze years. Drink up!

Other Half Core Classics

These are some of the most dialled in, tight and precise hop-forward beers on the market - and beers which despite their familiarity, demand repeat consumption!

These are the four beers in Other Half’s core range, which are brewed every month, always fresh and tasting as good as they can possibly be.

Green City is the flagship IPA, and is exceptionally well balanced with Citra, Centennial and Simcoe bringing notes of grapefruit and stonefruit in abundance, all over a creamy-smooth base. If there is an everyday beer from Other Half, this is it.

All Citra Everything is a celebration of Citra in a big DIPA which pulls no punches. You’re getting everything that you love about Citra, but amped up to fairly ridiculous levels with the addition of Citra Lupulin powder bringing some beautiful grapefruit notes. It almost has a bit of an old-school vibe, harking back to the days when Citra was King and all bowed down before him. Just a great beer.

Broccoli is almost a precursor to a lot of the more famous one-off Other Half beers of the last few years, with a great mix of NZ and US hops bringing some of that tropical fruit hit, while maintaining a bitter and dank edge to stop things from becoming too cloying. It’s rounded and nuanced, but punchy - making this DIPA go down smoother than its ABV suggests.

And finally - Green Flowers. What can we say about this beer - Other Half going West Coast? What is this voodoo? A clear and crisp base, a transparent beer with big bitterness - it’s as modern an interpretation of a West Coast as you will find, and brings the best of Other Half’s hazy IPA experience into the realm of the bitter bruisers. Simcoe, Chinook, Nelson Sauvin and Columbus give you pine, white grape, and a big hit of DANK which keeps it super quenching and interesting. Reach for this one at any chance you can find it!

Alchemist / Focal Banger

There’s always more talk about Focal Banger’s stablemate, the one who gets all the plaudits. But today we’re shining the spotlight on Focal Banger - this marvel of Citra and Mosaic - which is definitely NOT just a scaled down version of Heady Topper.

We absolutely love this beer, and find it is the one we reach for more often than Heady Topper, with its punchy blend of two classic hops being far greater than the sum of its parts. Properly bitter and dank, tasting notes on this one go all the way from hot tarmac, to blueberry and grapefruit - it’s an extremely complex beer, with layers upon layers of flavour rewarding the attuned drinker.

With a proper bitter hit, and a smooth malt base, this one can be crushed or quietly sipped and be just as good. If you’ve been sleeping on Focal Banger, now’s your time to wake up and smell the tarmac!

8 of the Best From Tree House

Mixing it up a little with this week’s drop with restocking of some exceptional hazy brews, some new beers and two extremely good, but quite different stouts from the mighty Tree House.

We’re focussing in on the stouts this week as with the end of summer nearing, the stout season is drawing in on us. The two stouts today fall on both sides of the stout flavour spectrum.

The dry and roasty Sojourn shows what can be done with a good dose of Magnum and Centennial hops. Bitterness is derived from both hops and malts and gives some big notes of pine, dark chocolate and orange peel. It’s half the way to a Black IPA!

All That Is And All That Will Ever Be is not only a mouthful to say, but also a mouthful to drink. Rich and full, the lactose, cacao nibs and coffee combine to give layers of flavour with an added creaminess. You’re going to get a full cream mocha with this one.

Fidens Brewing Co / The Color of the Night

Silky smooth, and rich with notes of espresso and milk chocolate - this is what an Oatmeal Stout should taste like.

Fidens are rightly known for their excellence in the world of haze and hops, but each joyful sip of this stout is a reminder that they are also extremely good brewers of other styles too.

Oatmeal Stouts are always that little bit more silky and smooth, with the addition of oats in the brew bringing a fuller, creamier mouthfeel than other styles of stouts. This one perfectly hits the brief, and at 5.2% is absolutely set for a session!

Other Half / Double Citra Daydream + Dream in Green

Whole lot of Oatcream in the mix today with a luxuriously luscious DIPA and IPA that’ll have you in full daydream mode this Sunday. Citra, Motueka and Wai-iti hops all atop a thick and creamy base which make these go down oh soo smooth.

If you like this style, these are the best of the best.

We’ve been championing Brewery De Kromme Haring right from the start. They’re one of our favourite local breweries, with their ability to dial it in on almost any style and knock it out of the park making them one of the best all round breweries out there.
