Bergen op Zoom is such a great spot for history.

We chose it for Open Monument Day & were not disappointed.

First up was the Gevangenpoort, where we climbed into a tower of 14th century prison cells with their torture devices. Eek!

On a more cheery note, next was the oldest palace in the Netherlands, the Markizenhof, with regal courtyards & medieval halls.

Topped off by popping in to the ancient council chambers in the 14th century town hall, overlooking the Grote Market through its impressive leaded windows.

Meet Castle Dussen.

Built by the Duke of Brabant to protect the border of the province against the mighty forces of Holland.

Almost wiped off the face of the Earth during the devastating St Elizabeth's flood of 1421.

Owned by some of the most powerful families in the Republic of the Netherlands.

Besieged and taken by the Spaniards during the 80 years war.

And finally, transformed into a magnificent fairy-tale castle , by a Dutch nobleman, who added a Tuscan collonade in the courtyard, and two of the most beautiful donjons (watchtowers) you ever saw.

You almost feel as if you have been transported back into a Disney fairytale when you step onto the grounds of this breathtaking piece of living heritage, just outside the village of Dussen in North Brabant.

Surrounded by forests, water, old farms and the most idyllic, Dutch polder landscape...
..you'd love this place, I just know it.
