De Candelaer is a small delftware factory in the centre of Delft. We produce delftware in blue and polychrome and also some modern delft.

At De Candelaer Delft, we are known for our traditional Delft Blue designs, inspired by centuries of Dutch craftsmanship. But every now and then, our painters are given complete creative freedom… 🎨

And that’s when something truly special happens.

This beautiful ginger jar is one of those unique creations. Hand-painted in our own atelier in Delft, it combines the classic deep Delft Blue with delicate green details, creating an intricate pattern with a completely different character.

No template. No series. Just one.

Once a piece like this is finished, it will never be reproduced in exactly the same way. That makes it a true one-of-a-kind piece of Delftware — created by hand, from start to finish.

We’re very proud that De Candelaer Delftware is mentioned in a Rick Steves travel guide to the Netherlands — bringing our little Delft Blue factory in the heart of Delft to the attention of travelers from all over the world. 💙

For those who may not know him: Rick Steves is one of America’s best-known and most respected European travel experts. For decades, he has been introducing American travelers to the very best of Europe through his bestselling guidebooks, his popular public television series Rick Steves’ Europe, radio shows, tours and online travel guides.

That makes it especially meaningful to us to see De Candelaer included in his recommendations. Here in our Delft atelier, we continue a centuries-old tradition, creating and hand-painting authentic Delft Blue pottery — right here in the city where Delftware became famous.

Step inside De Candelaer, located in the historic heart of Delft! 💙

Delft Blue pottery has been part of the city’s identity since the 17th century. Inspired by the highly prized blue-and-white porcelain imported from China, Delft potters developed their own distinctive style. Over the centuries, it became famous around the world and remains one of the Netherlands’ most treasured traditions.

At De Candelaer, we are proud to keep this craftsmanship alive. Since 1975, our small pottery factory has produced authentic Delftware in its own workshop. From shaping and firing the clay to glazing and painting, every step is carried out with care—and every decoration is still painted entirely by hand.

🇬🇧 A piece of Delft craftsmanship, created especially for the UK.

These beautiful hand-painted ginger jars have been crafted with great care in our workshop De Candelaer in Delft. Every jar is individually painted by hand using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations.

Originally, ginger jars were used to store valuable ginger, herbs and spices imported from Asia. Today, they have become timeless decorative pieces, admired for their elegance and rich history.

This pair was made as a special commission for a customer in the United Kingdom, demonstrating that authentic Delft Blue continues to be appreciated around the world.

From casting and firing to hand painting and glazing, the entire production process still takes place in our workshop in Delft, just as it did centuries ago.
