An exceptional Japanese sword with a remarkable history

We are pleased to present this impressive NBTHK certified Shintō katana by Inaba no Kami Fujiwara Kanetoki 因幡守藤原金辰, a highly regarded Mino swordsmith of the Edo period.

Surviving works by Kanetoki are scarce, and full length katana are considerably less frequently encountered than his shorter blades. With a nagasa of 68.1 cm, this signed katana is a particularly desirable example of his work.

But this sword has another fascinating chapter to its history.

Centuries after it was forged, the blade was mounted for service with the Imperial Japanese Navy in an outstanding Kai guntō koshirae.

The mounting is especially impressive. The saya is completely covered in samegawa, traditionally referred to by collectors as sharkskin, a distinctive and seldom encountered variation of the Japanese naval sword. Together with the beautifully preserved gilt naval fittings and surviving naval officer's tassel, it creates a magnificent and highly collectible ensemble.

The overall condition is superb.

This is far more than simply a military sword. At its heart is an authentic seventeenth century Japanese Nihontō by an accomplished Shintō smith, preserved centuries later in an exceptional Imperial Japanese Navy mounting.

NEW ARRIVAL TAKAHASHI HIDETSUGU OSAKA 1943

We are pleased to present an exceptional traditionally forged katana by the highly regarded Osaka swordsmith Takahashi Hidetsugu (高橋秀次), art name Ryūunshi, forged in August 1943.

Hidetsugu lived and worked in Osaka and studied under the celebrated Gassan Sadakatsu, placing his work within one of the most important Japanese swordmaking traditions of the twentieth century.

His reputation was already firmly established before this sword was made. In 1941 Hidetsugu achieved First Seat at the 6th Shinsaku Nihontō Tenrankai, an important national exhibition for newly forged Japanese swords. Only two years later, at the height of his wartime career, he forged this katana.

Hidetsugu also associated himself with the historic Fuyuhiro lineage, identifying himself on some surviving swords as the 23rd generation descendant of Fuyuhiro.

The blade itself is impressive. With a nagasa of 66.8 cm, broad 3.15 cm motohaba and substantial 7.5 mm kasane, it has a powerful yet elegant sugata. The blade is preserved in beautiful polish and shows a refined, controlled suguha based hamon.

The nakago bears the impressive signature:

Naniwa jū Ryūunshi Takahashi Hidetsugu saku

The reverse is dated to a fortunate day in August 1943 and the nakago carries the desirable star mark, associated with traditionally forged blades accepted within the Japanese Army swordsmith system.

Importantly, the sword has recently been examined in Japan and awarded NBTHK Hozon Tōken, with the star mark explicitly recorded on the certificate.

The katana is presented in a beautiful complete traditional koshirae with an elegant black lacquered saya, traditionally constructed tsuka and matching fittings.

A particularly attractive sword for the collector of Gassan related work, gendaitō and high quality Shōwa period nihontō, combining an important smith, documented recognition, excellent condition, traditional workmanship and modern NBTHK certification.

The Takahashi and Gassan tradition is also represented in our collection by our 1923 Takahashi Nobuhide katana, providing a fascinating connection between two important swords from this lineage.

**TAIKEI NAOTANE AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE NAGAMAKI FROM 1845**

We are proud to present one of the most exceptional Japanese swords currently offered by BushidoShop.

This magnificent nagamaki was forged by Taikei Naotane (1778–1857), one of the greatest and most highly regarded swordsmiths of the Shinshintō period.

Dated **Kōka 2 (1845)**, the blade remains in its impressive original nagamaki form with an **ubu nakago**, bearing Naotane’s full signature, **kaō** and date.

The blade has been awarded **NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon** and is classified by the NBTHK as a naginata.

Original nagamaki are rare. An original, signed and dated example by a master of the stature of **Taikei Naotane** is considerably more exceptional. The combination of its imposing form, important maker, ubu condition and high-level NBTHK certification makes this a sword for the serious collector.

Not every Japanese military sword is the same.

This recently acquired Hirakawa Akimitsu Katana is a genuine traditionally forged Nihontō, individually hand forged during the Second World War by the respected swordsmith Hirakawa Akimitsu, working at the foot of Mount Fuji.

What makes this sword truly special is its documented history.

The tang bears the original inscription confirming that it was carried by Officer Miyata Kiyoshi, creating a direct connection between the blade and its wartime owner. Combined with its official NBTHK Hozon Token Certificate, this provenance transforms the sword into far more than a military weapon. It is a preserved piece of Japanese history.

Even more remarkable is its originality.

The sword remains in its complete Type 98 Shin Guntō koshirae, accompanied by its original wartime officer's tassel and original shirasaya. Ujifusa Katana NBTHK Hozon

I am pleased to present a recent addition to the collection: an elegant katana attributed by the NBTHK to Ujifusa, a swordsmith of the late Muromachi to early Edo period.

Originally signing as Kanefusa before receiving the name Ujifusa, he belonged to the renowned Mino tradition, a school celebrated for producing practical and highly effective swords during one of the most turbulent periods in Japanese history.

This blade is particularly appealing for its graceful sugata and excellent state of preservation. The sword is mounted in a striking Imperial Naval Tachi koshirae, complete with a rare sharkskin-covered saya, creating a fascinating combination of traditional samurai craftsmanship and later military history.

Ko-Mihara Katana NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon

Today I am pleased to present a remarkable new addition to the collection.

This authentic Ko-Mihara katana, attributed by the NBTHK and awarded Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken, dates to the Early Kamakura period, circa 1250.

Forged nearly 800 years ago, this sword originates from what many collectors and scholars consider the golden age of Japanese swordsmithing. The Ko-Mihara tradition represents one of the earliest schools of Bingo Province and is admired for its refined workmanship, elegant sugata, and strong connection to the classical Yamato traditions.

Despite the passage of nearly eight centuries, the blade retains a beautiful and graceful form, featuring a nagasa of 69.7 cm and an impressive 2.1 cm sori that immediately evokes the elegance of the Kamakura era.

The sword is accompanied by a complete koshirae and an independently papered NBTHK Hozon Aizu Shōami tsuba, adding further historical and artistic significance to the package.

Holding a sword like this is a reminder that Nihontō are far more than weapons. They are surviving witnesses to history, preserved and appreciated across countless generations.
