The Pixies: From teddy bears to a band!

6 April. The legendary front man of The Pixies Charles Thompson (1965 - Black Francis) was born in Boston. His parents moved around a lot and separated when he was very young. They separated twice as a matter of fact. By the time Charles was twelve his mother and very religious stepfather joined a church tied to the evangelical Assemblies of God church. (Many of Black Francis’ later songs are influenced by this period and refer to the Bible.)

After High school Charles Thompson went to University, but dropped out in his second year. He wanted to start a band with his friend Joey Santiago, but money was a problem so he needed to find a job first. He found one in a warehouse, ‘managing buttons on teddy bears’, but at the same time prepared himself for the moment he finally would have his own band: He composed songs on his acoustic guitar and wrote lyrics on the train to and from work. In 1987 he and Santiago formed The Pixies. Kim Deal (bassist) and David Lovering (drummer) were recruited and with financial help from Charles’ father they recorded a demo tape. The tape, commonly referred to as ‘The Purple Tape’ led to a recording contract and was the beginning of the very nice career of The Pixies.

This was the period he adopted his stage name ‘Black Francis’. Why? His father had told him that in case he would have had another son, he would have called him Francis. Anyway, it’s his birthday so happy 38 Birthday Charles ‘Black Francis’ Thompson!

ABBA, Swedish delight

5 April. Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, in short, "ABBA", is the third on the world list in terms of best-selling albums (over 370 million). Ring Ring, Waterloo, Honey, honey, SOS, Mamma mia, Fernando, The winner takes it all, are just some of the many successful singles Abba released.

The four Swedish members of the band Abba were individually already successful singers, before they decided to work together and form the group Abba. Their big breakthrough was when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their song Waterloo. Many successes all over the world followed. In 1983 Abba decided to insert a pause, but this eventually lead to the final breakup of the group. That they will never perform as Abba again proves the fact that the four members of the group were offered $ 1 billion (!) in 2004 if they would return as Abba and make just one tour, an offer they rejected. But 4 July 2008 they came together anyway. Not to sing, but on the Swedish premiere of ‘Mamma Mia’ The Movie (12 February 2005) in Stockholm.

Agnetha Fältskog is celebrating her 63 birthday today. Many happy returns of the day Agnetha!

Janis Joplin, just looking for acceptance

4 April. Why beautiful, kind and very talented Janis Joplin (1943-1970) had such a low self-esteem might be explained by things that happened when she was a young schoolgirl growing up in an all-American environment with raked lawns, Barbie doll looking girls, and fussy prom queens. It was all about looks and teenager Janis was too fat in the eyes of her classmates ánd she suffered from acne. Reason enough not to be accepted and being teased and neglected in a terrible way. It took her to the point that she didn’t care anymore, started wearing trousers which was not done for a girl in those days, drinking and swearing with the boys and heaving s*x as often as possible. At some point she suffered from a severe identity crisis, not knowing where she belonged or even what she was: boy, girl, white or black.

In the early sixties Janis sang occasionally in coffee houses. Her raw blues voice was too intense for the Texans but Chet Helms, hippie and playing a pivotal role in the music scene of San Francisco, was impressed by her talent. In 1966 she became (background) singer of the band ´Big Brother and the Holding Company´. Within a year the band was a big success. Janis left the band in 1968 to pursue a solo career but on 4 April 1970 she attended a reunion concert in San Francisco and sang with the band again.

Maybe Janis’s song ‘Mercedes Benz’ tells us what Janis Joplin was really looking for: true love and acceptance for who she was. Not from others, but from herself. Well, anyway, the Lord bought her her next round on 4 October 1970. R.i.p. Janet.

The Doors

3 April. The Doors (1965 – 1973) is one of the most popular bands of the sixties. Young people loved their music, which can be best described as a mixture of blues, rock, psychedelic, classical and jazz. Especially the inflammatory and uncompromising performance of Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, made the bands’ appearances radical and controversial. The band was a really big success, until 1969, when something unfortunate happened. Jim Morrison was accused of showing his ‘private part’ during a concert in Miami. A lot of witnesses stated that Jim only opened his zipper, and nothing else, but the reputation of the group was damaged. Even the FBI meddled in with it. On 3 April 1969 Jim Morrison turned himself in, was charged with six counts of lewd behavior and was released on $ 2000 bail. In March of 1971 Jim Morrison moved to Paris to concentrate on his writing and to avoid further legal problems.

The case was reduced to two misdemeanors and still pending appeal when Morrison died in that same year. As the official cause of death the death certificate listed a heart attack. But whatever caused his death, it meant a great loss to the world. He was only 27 years old just like Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse when they died, and that is why people usually say ´he is one of the ’27 club’, a term to refer to popular musicians who have died at that age.

Jim Morrisons’ lewd behavior case was revised 39 years after his death!

Our photographer Laurens van Houten met Jim Morrison and the Doors and made some really nice pictures. www.rockartistphotos.com

Emmylou Harris, definitely worth her cowboy boots!

2 April. One of the remarkable things about Emmylou Harris (1947) is her impressive list of associated acts which is far too long to mention here. She has shared stages and microphones with just about all the country singers worth their cowboy boots during the last 40 years. You will have to believe me on my blue eyes that she sang with the greatest names on earth possible, or maybe at some point it was the other way around, since she became very famous herself. Anyway, she learned how to play songs from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez as a teenager (maybe not in person, but just by listening at their music) and started performing as a duo with one of her school mates Mike Williams. In 1971, already married and divorced, taking care of her first child on her own, she was noticed by Chris Hillman when she was playing a gig. Chris Hillman was impressed by her looks and sound. He introduced her to Gram Parsons who hired her to become one of his ‘Falling Angels’. A pretty nice start of a career!

Emmylou Harris released many chart-topping albums and singles over the course of her career. She won 12 Grammy awards already. But today she has got something else to celebrate: It’s her birthday!

On the picture you see an Emmylou Harris in her twenties. Again a great picture made by photographer Laurens van Houten. Want to see more pictures? Look at www.rockartistphotos.com

Toto, great music and practical jokes

1 April. I could tell you about the April Fools’ joke John Lennon and Yoko Ono played on 1 April 1970, issuing a statement to the press that they were having dual s*x change operations (very funny as many journalists believed it), but no, today is about Jeff Porcaro (1954 – 1992, Toto), since it is the day he was born. He played practical jokes often. Like during a tour, staying always in the same hotel chain and seeing the same art work everywhere, Jeff decided to do some kind of ‘enhancement’. If you ever stay in a Sheraton Hotel in Middle America, look closely at the idyllic rural countryside pictures. You might find a dog lifting it’s leg, or a guy without legs on a cart, pushing himself along with two tin cans. That’s Jeff Porcaro.

Jeff Porcaro began playing the drums at the age of 7. His father Joe taught him. Jeff’s first professional gig was playing in Sonny and Cher’s touring band. He wanted his own band so he started Toto with his friend David Paich and Toto made and makes great music, like ‘Rosanna’. Jeff Porcaro was Toto’s drummer until he died in 1992 due to an allergic reaction to pesticides he had used in the yard of his Hidden Hills home.

Metallica's Kirk Hammett: time to get some guitarlessons!

31 March. Kirk Hammett grew up in El Sobrante, a town near San Francisco. Being influenced by the music Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix his biggest wish was to own his own guitar. So, he saved every penny he could lay his hands on to be able to buy one. When he was 15 he bought his first one, a 1978 Fender Stratocaster, and started to experiment with. He was not learning how to play the guitar, but looking for one thing: finding the perfect sound, but couldn't find it. Maybe it was the guitar? He worked several jobs to be able to buy an other one, a 1974 Gibson Flying V.

When Kirk Hammett was 19 he was asked to join heavy metal band Exodus, which he accepted. Two years later he was asked to join the thrash-metal band Metallica. He joined Metallica on 31 March 1983. But something was missing. After the ‘Kill ‘Em All Tour’ (1983-1984) Kirk Hammett knew what: He needed to get guitar lessons! He found the perfect teacher: Joe Satriani!

Kirk Hammett has written and contributed many riffs for Metallica songs. One of these riffs, used in ‘Enter Sandman’ became one of Metallica's most popular songs.

Eric Clapton, a fast playing ‘slowhand’

30 March. If you wouldn’t know any better the life of Eric Clapton sounds very much like a fiction book story. His mother Patricia Clapton was 16 years old when he was born. His father was one of the Canadian soldiers that came to England the year before, to help liberate West-Europe from the Germans. But he was already married and returned to Canada before Eric was born. Eric was raised by his grandparents Rose and Jack and was told that Patricia was his sister instead of his mother. He found out the truth when he was 9 and his real mother already left to live in Germany after she married another Canadian soldier. After that he started to neglect his school work and became even quieter than he already was. Only music could make him happy, so when he asked for a guitar for his 13th birthday, he got one. He tried another school, the Kingston College of Art, but was sent away in the first year.

Eric Clapton joined several bands from 1963 The Roosters, then Casey, Jones and The Engineers, The Yardbirds and Cream. He soon got the nickname ‘Slowhand’. Not because he couldn’t play very fast, but because whenever he broke a guitar string during a concert, he stayed on stage and replaced it. The audiences would wait out the delay by doing what is called a ‘slow handclap’. But today we clap to congratulate Eric Clapton, as it is his birthday. Happy birthday, Eric!

The Stranglers Dave Greenfield, a knight in shining armor

Dave Greenfield (1949 - keyboard, synthesizer, organ, vocals) must be the least known ‘Strangler’, since he has always been ‘the quiet one’ in interviews with the members of the group The Stranglers. Yet his contribution to the sound of The Stranglers is very important. Quiet and maybe underrated since his trademark arpeggios, solos, middle eights and subtle touches of genius are able to elevate an already great song to another dimension. Some even say that Dave Greenfield is the sound of The Stranglers. But make up your own mind by listening to one of their songs, like ‘Golden Brown’.

When Dave Greenfield is not playing his instrument you can often find him on battlefields, since he is a fan of mediaeval battle reenactments and often takes part himself like a knight in shining armor. But not today, since it is his birthday. Many happy returns of the day, Dave!

Tina Turner (73) is getting married!

Very energetic, big hair, slender legs, miniskirt or a corset, very high heels and a nickname ´Queen of rock', this is all about our artist of today, Tina Turner (1939). As successful she is in her career, as difficult her personal life has been. Her parents got divorced when she was three, she was left behind at her grandparents, worked as a housekeeper by the time she was 12. But all the time she sang in church choirs. She loved to sing and was talented. At 19 she met Ike Turner. He was singing in a nightclub and sometimes young women in the audience were given a chance to sing something on stage too. Tina followed the band for weeks and finally it was her turn to sing in his show. We all know what followed; they got married and had two children. The marriage was marked by Ike abusing Tina and having affairs with other women. It was disbanded on 28 March 1976, leaving her with nothing more than her stage name Tina Turner, her two children and two children from Ike’s other relationships, because Ike expected her to raise them too.

Nowadays she is very careful with men of course. It took her boyfriend Erwin Bach 27 years to convince her to marry him and so they will this summer! I wish her all the happiness in the world!

Van Halen

27 March. Talking about the hard rock band Van Halen, for some reason we usually talk about eras. Of course the eras refer to Van Halens’ lineup changes in lead vocalists. The first era is called the David Lee Roth era (1972–1985). David Lee Roth was the first lead vocalist of Van Halen. In David’s childhood his uncle Manny Roth owned the New York establishment ‘Café Wha?’. Little David liked to hang around there and listen to performers like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. It was in that period that he got his first taste of and desire for show business. When David Lee Roth joined the band he was 19 years old (1972). Artistic and personal tensions between Eddy van Halen and him was the reason that he left the band in 1985. One of the tensions was that Eddy did not like David’s flamboyant behavior and stage persona at all. When David left the band he was 31.

On 27 March 1985 the Sammy Hagar era (1985–1996) started with a first performance, although some think it was in September of that same year at Farm Aid Concert.

The Who

26 March. The Englisch rockband The Who was formed in 1964 by Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. Their great music and very energetic live performances (instrument destruction included) resulted in selling over 100 million records.

See me, feel me, touch me, heal me … If this doesn´t ring a bell for you you have missed one of the best rockopera´s of all times: ‘Tommy’ of The Who. The music is beautiful, the story facinating. Want to know what it is about? OK. The boy Tommy witnesses a brutal murder his father commits on the lover of his mother, after which he is told not to have seen or heard anything and always to keep his mouth shut. He is traumatized and takes it literally and is blind and deaf-mute after this. His parents try everything to cure him, but he is diagnosed ‘autistic’ and all he notices is the music inside him and pinball machines (Pinball Wizzard). If you want to know if or how he is cured you will have to see the movie! ‘Tommy’ is The Who’s 4th album. All 4 bandmembers played a part in the movie. On 26 March 1975 the movie premiered in London.

On the picture. What happened? A grazy fan collapsing on stage? A fight? No. It is one of the bandmembers. Don’t forget; they are really good actors too! More very interesting pictures on www.rockartistphotos.com
