In 2024, the book âA Message from the Chairmanâ was published. Due to the current surge in interest in the history of Style Writing and Street Art, and because much more of Gartlerâs previously unknown graffiti-related work has surfaced, it was deemed necessary to create a second publication about his oeuvre. Donât expect a traditional art publication; this book is designed like an old-school black book. It features a chaotic collage of analog photography combined with letter studies, drawings, tags, and old newspaper clippings. It also includes handwritten explanatory texts by some key figures from the Leiden scene of the 1980s and 1990s. The city still possessed fringes, breeding grounds, and youth centers, with their corresponding artistic and musical creativity. A form of boundless freedom. This publication is a time capsule of the early days of the Leiden hip-hop and graffiti scene. Raw and unpolished.
