The book “De Groene Middeleeuwen – The Green Middle Ages” by Claudine Chavannes-Mazel and Linda IJpelaar, presented last Thursday in Museum Meermanno, really has turned out beautifully. Very proud that I am in it!

Wonderful! I would love to visit this.

This autumn you can visit the exhibition Beyond Words: illuminated manuscripts in Boston Collections in several venues in the city. The exhibition presents more than 260 manuscripts and printed books, dating from the ninth to the seventeenth centuries. This book of hours caused a revelation when it came on the market three years ago. It had been privately owned for ages and no researcher ever had been given access to it.
The manuscript contains thirty miniatures, which are unfinished. They are made in a style that reminds of the famous Limbourg brothers, which were active in Paris in the early 15th century.
The question now is whether they are really made by the Limbourg brothers themselves, or rather by illuminators working in a similar style, using the same compositions.
You can have a look and decide for yourself, because the miniatures have been published online, together with an extensive description and some miniatures from the Belles Heures to compare:

"Things Unseen: Vision, Belief, and Experience in Illuminated Manuscripts" is on view until September 25, 2016. Don't miss your chance to see how “unseen” spiritual experience were recorded by Jewish and Christian authors in antiquity, and translated in new ways by the illuminators of medieval and Renaissance books.
