Seven months in. What's actually worked? 🌱

It's the last day of July, which makes this a fair moment to look at the beds honestly.

Every season has one crop that quietly overdelivered — the row you keep going back to — and one that was a polite disaster. Ours: the radishes have been relentless. The parsnips are pretending they don't exist.

You're probably watering wrong. 💧

Not too little — too often, and too shallow.

A light sprinkle every evening wets the top two centimetres and has evaporated by mid-morning. The roots learn to stay up there, where the soil dries out first, and the plant wilts the moment you skip a day.

One long, slow soak twice a week does the opposite. Water reaches 20–30 cm down, roots follow it, and the plant carries itself through a hot spell without you.

Three things that make the difference:

💧 Water the soil, not the leaves — wet foliage in warm weather is how mildew starts
🌅 Early morning beats evening; the surface dries before the slugs come out
🌾 Mulch after watering, not before, or you're only wetting the mulch

Seedlings are the exception. They have no root system yet, so they need the surface damp every day until they're up.

Still time. 🌱
