What is a Flat Profile and why is it important for underwater video?
Our colleague Sverrin explains why shooting in a Flat Profile can make a huge difference to your underwater footage.
A Flat Profile (such as LOG or Cine) is a camera setting that records footage with lower contrast and reduced colour saturation. It may look a little dull straight out of the camera, but it gives you much more control during post-production.
Why use a Flat Profile underwater?
• Preserve more colour information – Underwater, water absorbs the warm colours such as red and orange first. A Flat Profile retains more image data, making it much easier to restore these colours during editing.
• Better colour correction – Because the original footage is less saturated, you reduce the risk of colour shifts and loss of detail when grading your video.
• Greater dynamic range – More detail is preserved in both shadows and highlights, helping you avoid blown highlights and overly dark areas.
By filming in a Flat Profile, you can fine-tune your white balance, restore colours more naturally, and achieve the best possible final result.
