What is a Flat Profile and why is it important for underwater video?

Our colleague Sverrin explains why shooting in a Flat Profile can make a huge difference to your underwater footage.

A Flat Profile (such as LOG or Cine) is a camera setting that records footage with lower contrast and reduced colour saturation. It may look a little dull straight out of the camera, but it gives you much more control during post-production.

Why use a Flat Profile underwater?

• Preserve more colour information – Underwater, water absorbs the warm colours such as red and orange first. A Flat Profile retains more image data, making it much easier to restore these colours during editing.

• Better colour correction – Because the original footage is less saturated, you reduce the risk of colour shifts and loss of detail when grading your video.

• Greater dynamic range – More detail is preserved in both shadows and highlights, helping you avoid blown highlights and overly dark areas.

By filming in a Flat Profile, you can fine-tune your white balance, restore colours more naturally, and achieve the best possible final result.

Do you already shoot your underwater videos in a Flat Profile?

Shooting high-quality 360° underwater footage is all about how the optics behave once you drop below the surface.
Compared to standard 360° underwater housings, image quality is often noticeably limited with softer detail, reduced sharpness, and a loss of overall clarity as soon as you go underwater.
This is exactly where the Nauticam housing takes a different approach.
It features a fully integrated 190° dome lens with anti-reflection coating, designed specifically for underwater imaging. The goal is simple: keep the image as natural and usable as possible, even in challenging underwater conditions.
You get improved brightness, stronger contrast, better sharpness, and clean edge-to-edge clarity, all critical when you’re working in true 360°.
It also allows for a working distance starting from 0 cm, which opens up creative freedom for close underwater shots that most systems struggle with.

⚠️ Note: the camera’s original lenses must be removed before placing it inside the housing.
This is a system built for creators who care about underwater image quality first, not compromises.

Sometimes you come across a photo that instantly takes you back… 2014.

I still look back on that day with a smile. Teamwork, timing, a bit of luck… and above all, a great buddy by my side. Although I have to admit: for Corne Bolders, it became slightly less enjoyable at some point 😅. After diving into that cold water again and again, the enthusiasm turned a little… visibly painful.

But hey, all for that one shot. And what a shot it was. Still proud every time I see it.
