I'm not a linguist, but...
People often think that aluminum is an American bastardization of aluminium. But it's actually the other way round. Aluminum was there first.
British chemist and inventor Sir Humphry Davy, who is credited with naming this element, actually called it alumium in 1808.
He was attempting to isolate it from the oxide called alumina. Other chemists hated alumium, so by 1812 Davy revised it to aluminum.
Mind you, he was British. So you could argue that “aluminum” is the element’s original British name.
But they still hated it because it didn’t sound classical enough.
This was the 19th century. Nobody actually spoke Latin anymore.
But to make it fancier, somebody proposed aluminium.
In the meantime, aluminum crossed the Atlantic and stuck, and now we use both words.
So this is not a case of lazy Americans dropping a syllable. It’s a case of British people wanting to sound posh. Who would have thought?
