TODAY, THE LIGHT CHANGES.
With today’s partial solar eclipse visible across parts of Europe, it feels like a good moment to revisit Momentum of Light by Iwan Baan and Francis Kéré.
Across Burkina Faso, intense sunlight has shaped architecture for generations. Traditional buildings often have very few or very small openings: protecting their interiors from the glaring sun while allowing just enough natural light to enter. The contrast can be extreme — from almost blinding daylight outside to near darkness within.
In Momentum of Light, architectural photographer Iwan Baan captures these changing conditions of light, shadow and everyday life. His photographs are accompanied by sketches by Francis Kéré, who grew up in Burkina Faso and whose own architecture is deeply informed by this environment.
A book about architecture shaped by the sun — particularly appropriate this week.
