High Effective Capacity for Green Asparagus Processing in Africa

A customer in Africa was looking for a green asparagus grading line with one key requirement: the highest possible effective capacity.

That is exactly where our solution makes the difference.

The line starts with two high-capacity washing and cutting machines, ensuring a continuous flow of product. Then the asparagus is distributed over two grading lanes, where each spear is sorted by diameter and length into five classes:
✔ Small
✔ Medium
✔ Large
✔ Extra Large
✔ Jumbo

Both grading lanes discharge onto a shared set of conveyor belts. Instead of collecting asparagus in small bins that need to be emptied continuously, each class is delivered onto a conveyor with buffer capacity.

This allows operators to bundle and pack the asparagus directly, without handling the product multiple times. Selected grades can even be routed through additional short-cutting units when market demand requires shorter spears.

🌱 A wonderful way to close the asparagus season!

Last week, the Aspergegilde held its annual end-of-season gathering at our company. It was a pleasure to welcome everyone for this special occasion.

After a warm welcome and a short introduction to our companies, our guests joined guided tours through our production facilities. It was great to show how the machines of Christiaens Agro Systems and Lenssen Vul- en Sluittechniek are developed and built, and to share the ideas behind our solutions and how they help growers and food processors improve efficiency and product quality.

The gathering ended with a BBQ, giving everyone the chance to catch up and share experiences from the past season.

🥬 Smarter grading of leeks with Vision & AI

At Christiaens Agro Systems, we are preparing a new project in which leeks will be automatically inspected using advanced Vision technology and AI (Machine Learning).

The system measures length and diameter, while also evaluating spots, defects and other visual abnormalities. This enables a consistent, objective and repeatable quality assessment, independent of operator experience or fatigue.

As leeks are increasingly sold per piece instead of per kilogram, meeting specific quality requirements becomes more important than ever. Accurate grading helps growers and packers maximize the value of their product and achieve the best possible market price.

At the same time, automation reduces the need for manual inspection. By replacing repetitive visual quality checks with automated Vision and AI technology, fewer operators are required at the grading line, helping businesses address labor shortages while lowering operational costs.

A win-win: more consistent quality assessment, higher product value, and reduced labor requirements.

The asparagus season demands speed, quality and certainty during harvest.

With Chris, our tracked care and harvesting machine for white asparagus, we help growers make their harvest more efficient, reliable and easier to plan. Chris drives through the asparagus bed, cuts the white asparagus with two round knives, sieves the soil and rebuilds the ridge afterwards.

This offers clear advantages:
• Labour savings: Chris is operated by one person and offers space for up to four people to pre-sort the asparagus directly on the machine.
• Better ridge hygiene: by sieving the soil and rebuilding the bed, Chris creates a cleaner ridge, contributing to improved asparagus quality.
• More control over planning: with a driving speed of 0–60 metres per minute and integrated lighting, Chris offers flexibility during busy harvest periods.
• Field pre-sorting: thin or crooked asparagus can be left in the field immediately, avoiding unnecessary handling of unprofitable product.
• Strong and manoeuvrable: thanks to its tracks and separately driven track system, Chris performs well in challenging conditions and needs minimal space to turn.
