Yesterday marked the final day of business for the .candleco whose candles I’ve been proud to stock since 2022. Sara made the difficult decision to close the business, and while I’m so sad to see it come to an end, I’m also incredibly grateful to have been a small part of its journey over the past few years.

I placed one final order before they closed, which means you’ll still be able to find these beautiful candles on my website (they aren’t all on there yet!) and at the fairs and events I’ll be attending from October through to February.

Once this final collection has found its homes, that will be the end of this chapter. These candles won’t be returning, so if there’s a favourite fragrance you’ve had your eye on, this will be your last opportunity to bring one home.

Supporting independent makers has always been at the heart of what I do, so saying goodbye to a business whose candles have become such a lovely part of my business is bittersweet.

Thank you to everyone who has chosen one of these candles over the last few years.

And to Sara, thank you for creating such beautiful products and for trusting me to share them with my customers. I wish you all the very best for whatever comes next.

I’d just like to say a huge thank you to the organisers and volunteers of the festival. Congratulations for putting on a fabulous first event, especially in the intense heat.

Thank you so much for all the visitors coming to the festival and making it a fun event. To everyone who stopped by our stall either to buy, to look or just for a chat. We appreciate all your support.

And finally thank you to for being such a lovely neighbour with beautifully handmade leather book bags!

I think I need a bit of rest now!

✨ It’s a grotesque (and not a gargoyle)!

Grotesques and gargoyles are another subject which I have a million photos of on my phone.

Grotesques are stone carvings placed high on cathedral walls, where they have watched for centuries. It’s rare to see them up close.

When I visited York last year, I found this one in the stonemason’s yard beside York Minster.

📷 photo was taken by me in York, 21 March 2025.

The grotesque I photographed is newly carved, created to replace one long lost to centuries of wind and rain. Even with careful study, much of the original design had disappeared, leaving the modern stonemason to interpret what once was.

It is carved from limestone, by hand, using traditional tools.

Grotesques appear alongside gargoyles, high on the building, but unlike gargoyles they serve no practical purpose. They are decorative, often humorous, and full of symbolism. Many take hybrid forms: part human, part animal, part imagination. They are shaped as much by folklore as by faith.

This particular carving is intended to symbolise the tension between good and evil. The frog emerging from the mouth draws on medieval symbolism, where the frog represents demons. Other elements, like the fish, suggest ideas of faith and redemption.

❓Did you know? A grotesque is purely decorative, while a gargoyle serves as a rain spout!

✨ My quick guide to using long and short stitch!

This stitch is perfect for curves and straight lines alike, and especially useful for filling medium to larger areas with smooth, blended and flowing stitches.
In these examples—beetles, spiders, crescent moons, and swords—you can see how it can be used for both flowing shapes and more structured forms.
