Dear citizens of the EU.by now all of your favorite small business owners have posted about the awesome new rules that will kill a lot of small businesses… I have a few things to day as well, and I’m going to be honest with you today.
I’ll be the first to applaud accountability and restraint when it comes to dumping plastics and packaging anywhere. You know us, and you know that we don’t even have bags, we’ll reuse the bags the balls of yarn came in so it doesn’t go to waste. We use mostly recycled shipping bags and we vacuum press everything. You can even reuse the vacuum bags we send you for food since it’s food safe and very light weight. Because we’re so hyper aware of it our packaging is usually around 35 grams per parcel. Total. No extra nonsense to keep both weight and volume low, but also to keep trash as low as possible.
We obviously want to comply and we’ve gone through the right channels to get permission to send EU wide. But honestly, even with our low amount of packaging that we send, the absolutely instantaneous astronomical fees and “hidden cost” is making this attempt a loss before it even begins. I’m calling out Poland, Denmark and Spain for your absolutely ridiculous fees and s**t that a company needs to go through so we can even get to pay 1 euro for the packaging. Guys I have 5 parcels to Spain, that’s maybe 500 grams of plastic in recycleable packaging. I still need to go through hoops and lengths and pay a few 100s of euros just to be able to receive orders.
How about Denmark. Your legislators are honestly anti globalization and the environment has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Over 500 euros per year for “processing and awareness”.
Then there’s Poland, with 400 something in fees just to be able to ship less than 300 grams of plastic per year.
The EU should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. This will not achieve anything. The big companies who don’t care about your en environment are not afraid of 500 extra per year, the big companies will be very happy with what you’re doing right now. You’re killing local (within the EU borders), you are weakening our EU wide economy.
