Meet the Morpho didius, one of the most stunning butterflies in the Morpho family 🦋 This species is native to the tropical rainforests of Peru where it thrives in humid lowland forest habitats. One of the things that makes this butterfly so impressive is its size. The Morpho didius hMorpho didius largest wingspans among all Morpho species, often reaching up to 15 centimeters or even more, which is roughly the size of an adult human hand. That striking blue you see isn’t actually pigment by the way, it’s created through structural coloring in the wing scales that reflects light in a unique way, giving it that shimmering effect.

In the wild, these butterflies are known for their fast and erratic flight pattern, which actually helps them avoid predators since the flashes of blue make it hard to track their movement. It’s also worth mentioning that the underside of their wings looks completely different, usually a muted brown with eye spot patterns that help with camouflage when their wings are closed.
