A quiet corner of South Yorkshire with a surprisingly Nordic thread 🇬🇧🇳🇴
Roche Abbey was founded in 1147, when Cistercian monks travelled south from Newminster Abbey to establish a monastery in this secluded limestone valley. Its soaring Gothic ruins still feel wonderfully remote.
And the Norway connection? Roche belonged to the same Cistercian family tree as Lyse Abbey near Bergen. Newminster, Roche’s mother house, had been founded by monks from Fountains Abbey; just a year before Roche was established, monks from Fountains had also crossed the North Sea to found Lyse. Two medieval communities, one in Yorkshire, one in Norway - linked by the same monastic network.
