✦ THE GUCCI FLORA ✦
You guys know we love sourcing beautiful pieces, that comes with a story. We found a gorgeous red, floral vintage Gucci bag in Italy, did some research and discovered it belongs to one of Gucci’s most fascinating design stories.
So, a little piece of Gucci history from us to you 🌺
Before Flora became one of Gucci’s most recognisable house signatures, it began as a very special commission.
In 1966, Princess Grace of Monaco, a.k.a Grace Kelly, visited Gucci in Milan and was looking for a floral silk scarf. Rodolfo Gucci commissioned illustrator Vittorio Accornero to create something entirely new, which he wanted to be an “explosion of flowers.”
The result was the now-iconic Flora, filled with intricate flowers, butterflies and botanical details, inspired in part by Botticelli’s Primavera.
The print eventually made its way from scarves onto ready-to-wear and, later, handbags — making this vintage Flora tote a particularly beautiful piece of Gucci’s early floral story.
And a little fun fact: Gucci says the original Flora drawings by Accornero are missing from the Gucci Archive, and apparently Gucci are still looking for them….imagine finding them hidden in a flea market in Milan.. Dreams do come true 🫧🫧🫧
