When Uncle Erik (Eric Arakawa Designs ) opens a zoom live shaping session for team rider Tom Hayman and the boss Sarah Hayman representing Vision Boarding it goes down in my books as a very special day.

The story behind one of the most iconic shapes in surf history:
The Arakawa Andy Irons “Rising Sun” Bandit.
If you surfed in the 2000s, this board is burned into your memory. But the history behind it runs way deeper than just a radical paint job.Here is the breakdown:
🤝 The Shaper & The Champ Legendary North Shore shaper Eric Arakawa Designs was the mastermind behind Andy Irons’ World Title equipment. Their surfer-shaper bond was pure magic. Andy trusted Eric to build the heavy-water weapons that fueled his legendary rivalry with Kelly Slater.🏎️ The “Go-Kart” Shape While Arakawa built guns for Pipeline, the Bandit was born for everyday speed. Eric calls his premium tour boards Formula 1 cars, but describes the Bandit as the ultimate high-performance “go-kart”—loose, fast, and highly responsive. Andy loved it so much, he ordered a fresh one every single year he was on tour.
🇯🇵 The “Rising Sun” ControversyThe radiating red-and-white spray became synonymous with Andy’s fierce, rockstar energy. While it is a revered monument to a golden era in surf culture, it carries heavy historical weight outside of it. The WWII military flag design remains deeply offensive in East Asia—causing a major international stir as recently as the 2024 Paris Olympics when pro surfers were ordered to paint over the graphic.
Saved From the AtticThe digital files for Andy’s original tour boards were lost to time. To bring this legend back to life, Eric Arakawa had to go into the Irons family attic, retrieve Andy’s actual personal surfboard, and scan the physical board to recreate the master files for modern surfers.A true piece of heavy-water history.
