**Why Are Some Thangka Paintings Expensive While Others Are More Affordable?**

This is a question we often hear from our customers: **Why does one thangka cost much more than another, even when they look similar or are the same size?**

The truth is, there is much more behind a thangka than what we see at first glance.

A thangka may look simple from a distance, but when you look closely, you can see the hours of work, patience, and skill behind every small detail. Some paintings take weeks, while more detailed and complex pieces can take much longer to complete.

The experience and skill of the artist also make a big difference. Traditional thangka painting requires careful knowledge of proportions, symbolism, colors, and details. It is not just about painting beautifully—it is also about following a traditional artistic practice.

The materials matter too. From the canvas and pigments to gold details and silk brocade, the quality of the materials can affect both the appearance and the price.

And sometimes, two thangkas may be exactly the same size, but one can require much more work. More deities, finer details, intricate ornaments, and complex backgrounds can mean many additional hours—or even days—of painting.

So, a higher price does not simply mean a bigger painting, and a more affordable thangka is not necessarily less meaningful.

Who is Sidpa Gyalmo? | སྲིད་པའི་རྒྱལ་མོ།

If you have ever seen a Bön thangka of a fierce female deity riding a mule, you may have wondered who she is. This is Sidpa Gyalmo, one of the most important protectors in the Yungdrung Bön tradition.

Her name is commonly understood as “Queen of Existence.” She is revered as a powerful protector, associated with overcoming obstacles and protecting the teachings and practitioners of Bön.

Her appearance can be intense—wrathful expression, powerful posture, weapons, and flames. But in sacred art, these fierce qualities are not simply about anger. They represent powerful protective energy and the ability to overcome harmful forces, obstacles, and ignorance.

Sidpa Gyalmo is especially associated with her red mule and black mule forms, which appear in different Bön traditions and practices. Her various forms and symbols are an important part of Bön iconography.

Her story and practice have been carried through generations in monasteries, rituals, thangka paintings, and sacred statues. Here in Nepal, Triten Norbutse Monastery has a particularly strong connection with the practice of Red Mule Sidpa Gyalmo.

What is Yungdrung Bön?

Yungdrung Bön is one of Tibet’s ancient spiritual traditions, with a long and rich history of teachings, meditation, rituals, sacred texts, monasteries, and traditional art.

The word Yungdrung (གཡུང་དྲུང་) carries the meaning of something eternal, enduring, and indestructible. The Yungdrung symbol is also an important and recognizable symbol within the Bön tradition.
