Look... I didn't become a florist so I could wage war on floral foam.

Yet here we are. 😂

Along the way I've learnt a few things about flowers, sustainability, and why buying local actually matters. Enough that I can't not kōrero about it.

So I've put together 10 things this sustainable Māori florist wants you to know.

All of it comes from a place of aroha for flowers, manaakitanga for our people, and deep respect for Papatūānuku and the taonga she gives us.

What a special day. 💐

On Saturday, I held my very first floral class, and my heart is so full. To have it booked by the Wairewa Kaumātua — my own marae, my own people — meant the world to me.

As someone with whakapapa to Wairewa, the support of my whānau and hapū as I grow this little business in Akaroa is something I cherish deeply.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was being able to teach my aunties — the very wāhine who have taught me so much throughout my life. It felt like a beautiful full-circle moment.

Nuku Manaakitanga & Floral Design is grounded in the values of Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga — caring for our people, our places, our spaces, and our taonga.

Mum guilt is real… and it’s so easy to fall into that space when you’re out here trying to build something for your babies 🤍

If I’m honest, I’m still figuring out the balance. This summer I’ve felt a bit absent at times, and it’s not always the mum I want to be. That sits heavy in my ngākau.

But then my boy says things like, “Mum, you’re your own boss,” and I’m reminded of the bigger picture. He sees the mahi. He sees the hustle. And he’s proud that his mama is building something with purpose — something that fits around our whānau, not the other way around.

I’m learning as I go, showing up the best I can, and building a life for us that feels aligned, intentional, and full of aroha.

And that’s something I can be proud of 💫
