Winter season is here, so from this weekend, we’re moving to our new opening hours:

Thursday & Friday: 9am to 3pm
Saturday: 9am to 1pm

Still need plants, organic compost, bulk supplies, or help planning your winter trees and garden projects? Give us a call on 027 406 4480 outside of opening hours. We’re always happy to chat through ideas for the season ahead.

Andrew has been asked to provide a video to Master Landscapers NZ, to encourage young landscapers to give the Young Landscaper of the Year Competition a crack. Be fair to say that although he competed back in 2012, he still isn't keen on being in the limelight and hates being on camera. But after a few bloopers like this, we got there.

Our message to anyone who failed at school, got told they wouldn't amount to much and those who don't know what they want to do in life. Don't give up. Surround yourself with good people who believe in you and you'll be surprised what you can achieve.

We're Hiring! Nursery Team Leader, Weka Garden Shop

Do you have a genuine passion for plants and love sharing that knowledge with others? We're looking for a Nursery Team Leader to join our small, friendly team in Central Otago.

This is a part-time permanent role (Thursday, Friday & Saturday to start), with real potential to grow as our business grows. Additional hours with our landscaping team maybe available.

You'll be leading the nursery day-to-day operations, caring for our plants, helping customers find exactly what they need, and working in a small team.

We'd love to hear from someone who is:
✅ Hands-on with plant propagation
✅ Knowledgeable across natives, perennials, shrubs & trees
✅ Warm and approachable with customers
✅ A self-starter who takes pride in their work

Applications close Monday 15th June, but we're reviewing as they come in, so get in early!

A little reminder to leave evergreen shrubs alone through winter.

Pruning evergreens too late in the season can expose soft new growth to frost damage, especially in colder Otago gardens. Waiting until spring gives plants a better chance to stay healthy and protected through the colder months.

Sometimes patience is part of good gardening. 🌿

After a fabulous time with us here at Weka Garden Shop, Sarah is moving away from the area and heading off on a new adventure.

Sarah has been an invaluable part of our small team and will be genuinely missed by her workmates and the many customers who have come to know her over the years.

Friday the 29th is her last day, so if you'd like to pop in and wish her well before she heads off, we'd love to see you.

Thank you for everything, Sarah. All the best in your next chapter.

Have you tackled your soil prep yet?

With soils still workable through late autumn, it's still a great time to dig in compost or well rotted manure before winter fully settles in. Adding organic matter helps improve soil structure, boost nutrients, and retain moisture through the colder months.

The work you put into your soil now pays off when spring arrives. 🌱

Tidy the veggie beds now, thank yourself in spring.

Clearing out spent crops and w**ds gives your garden a fresh start before the colder months settle in. Cover beds with black polythene to trap warmth and moisture while helping suppress w**d seeds, or mulch with pea straw, fallen leaves, or thick grass clippings to keep w**ds at bay.

A little garden clean up now makes spring planting season far easier.
