Hello from the Land of Burnout 👋🏻
🪫🪫🪫
Turns out starting a business in the worst economic climate in (at least) a decade is really, REALLY draining. We’re sure you’ve heard from other small business owners about how difficult the past year or so has been. There are lots of us who are getting other jobs or even shutting their businesses altogether because they cant make ends meet. It’s a scary and uncertain time to be a small business.
And that’s true at Parallel, too.
All of 2023 we were trending upwards. Our sales, our foot traffic, our regulars, our follower count - all of it was consistently growing at a steady pace. We felt so lucky to be seeing solid growth, even if it was hard-won.
And then 2024 started and everything slowed WAY down. For the first time we were trending downward, beyond the normal post-holiday drop. And all around us was the knowledge that it wasn’t us, it wasn’t anything we alone could change. It was that everyone, everywhere was struggling.
And then there came a day when Luna woke up and found that the idea of going in to work filled them with a creeping sense of dread, rather than excitement and joy.
So we made the difficult decision to scale back, to ease the pressure on Parallel to be our main income. Jess got a new job and we moved back online. We set our sights on building more slowly and intentionally while the economy eased - with the hope that as we readjusted we’d be able to search for a space that could support the full vision of Parallel.
Luna expected they’d take a short break after moving out of Home Base, but pretty quickly it became clear that they were deep in burnout. It was difficult for them to do anything at all.
We’d just planned to be back in full swing last week. Our stock is yet to be organised neatly and Luna’s office is a wreck. We’re definitely not at full capacity.
But we’re here, operating in Low Power Mode. You might not see us much on social media, it may take longer for us to respond to messages. But we’re here - shipping your orders, and curating our collection, and doing our absolute best to recharge so we can build back better.
