The more that children hear and use the words triangle, semicircle, and rectangle, the more they become familiar with the concepts of these shapes. We made our vehicles in these simple shapes with just that reason in mind! There are so many ways you can use this language in everyday situations to support their early learning!

Even before they talk, you can use these words to describe their play.

"Which car would you like? The triangle?"

"Wow, look how fast the semicircle car is! Do you think the rectangle one will be faster or slower? Let's find out!"

Fine motor skills are essential for learning to write. Think about all the different directions you move your fingers in when you write! (or how tired your own finger muscles get after writing out something by hand!). Developing fine motor skills can be hard work! Luckily, our threader sets are here to help make learning fun. As your child grasps the threading pen and laces up Mr Stegosaurus here, their fingers are working hard to gain strength.

Threaders now available in three different sets: transport, animals, or dinosaurs. Choosing your child's favourite will help them to get excited about learning too!

Playing together is like taking turns in a conversation.

Did you know that turn-taking is one of the first ways we learn social skills? This starts with very young babies. Think about what your facial expressions are doing next time you talk to a very young baby. Are you copying their facial expressions? This is how they learn to mirror yours back too! By copying our facial expressions, babies are learning to take turns. As babies start cooing and making sounds, this becomes turn-taking and conversation too. This progresses through child’s play as they learn to each take a turn to place a block in the hole.

Next time you wish your toddler or child would take turns, take a moment to recognise how far they have come in already learning these things above! It’s so hard for toddlers to wait for their turn, but with a bit of time they will eventually get it! 🥰

Have you heard of digraphs before? Our English letter set helps children to learn to read the sounds of letters by including 10 of the most commonly used English digraphs.

Digraphs are combinations of multiple letters which, when combined, make a single sound.

For example, if you’re teaching a child to sound out the word “that” – if they learnt the word by sounding out each individual letter, “tih, hih, ah, tih” they’d then have to adapt the sound when saying the word as a whole. If they learn the digraph, they'd sound it out as “thuh, ah, tih,” which is consistent with the way we pronounce it.

Learning to identify these digraphs helps children a lot with their reading skills when they come across an unfamiliar word.

What even is a CVC board, and how do you play with one?

A CVC board helps children to play with word sounds to create common three letter words (consonant-vowel-consonant). There are so many ways to play with these! The wordplay in itself is so open-ended, but if you’re after a bit more direction, you can try this:

🌿 At schools one way we do this is to move the consonants down the board and say the CVC words it makes using each vowel. For example, using P and T, you can make pat, pet, pot, pit, put. Not all the letters will make words, but it’s great for practising the sounds of the letters!

🌿 You can also make one CVC word and think of another word that rhymes – bonus points if you can find the tile to make the rhyming word!

🌿 How about making one CVC word each, and seeing if you can join any together e.g. bat+man, or if you can use both words to say a funny sentence, e.g. vet+hat = the vet ate a hat.
