Lately I got my very first violin back in my possession. I made it in 1991 in Cremona, at IPIALL school. The violin was patiently waiting for 35 years in the school storage until it finally got back to me.
The wood is very simple, the varnish was bright orange, typical from Cremona back in that time.
The craftsmanship is actually pretty good.
The violin came with no set up.
I did the set up and I worked on the varnish, removing a little here and there, adding some shades, (the pictures do not represent the real colour, in reality it is more brown and less yellow/orange than the pictures).
The violin is now ready to finally fulfil its purpose: being played.
The sound is very nice, especially in the upper registers, quite complex sound, and it needs to be played to mature.
If you would like to come to try it, call me to organise a booking. (+64) 0210604360.

Step into the captivating world of violin making, and you'll quickly discover that the seemingly simple curves of a violin's top and back plates hold profound secrets. This curvature, known as arching, is far more than just an aesthetic detail; it is the very soul of the instrument, dictating its st...

ARE OLD VIOLINS BETTER THAN NEW VIOLINS?

This is probably one of the biggest questions luthiers get asked all the time. From listening to thousands of violins and doing sound comparisons on instrument after instrument, I am more than comfortable to say that old violins do not necessarily sound better than new violins.Scientists are still t...

Here is the illustration of the restoration of the Nicolas Aine violin.
This violin is now for sale.

In September 2022, I came back from Europe with a French violin made by Nicolas Aine, about 200 years old. The violin was in poor condition: soundpost crack in the back, a few cracks in the belly, a few issues with the neck angle, and big damage on the varnish on the belly, possibly due to heat or s...

Soundpost crack repair - Soundpost patch process illustrated

A soundpost crack in a violin or a cello is a crack that is formed in the soundpost area of the belly or the back. This can happen when an instrument is dropped, or sometimes if the case is too small and someone tries to close the case and squeeze the violin in, (or if the shoulder rest is still att...
