Presenting the final part of servicing a client’s Pioneer Automatic Return Model PL-516 turntable: play testing! After disassembling, fixing, testing, then reassembling, I play test the turntable to ensure it works as it should and if there are any more tweaks needed. Thank you for following along with my series giving an inside look at some aspects of turntable servicing!

This month’s vinyl of the month is Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water, with the title track playing in the video!

Presenting part four of servicing a client’s Pioneer Automatic Return Model PL-516 turntable: Setting the stylus’ weight and reattaching the turntable cover.

Setting the weight of a turntable’s stylus is important for both sound quality and vinyl record protection. Too heavy of a weight can damage your records and too light can make the stylus skip and/or move around the surface of the record by not making full contact with the grooves.

Turntable covers are great at protecting your turntable from too much dust or accidental spills!

Stay tuned for the fifth and final part! (And Turntable Guy’s Vinyl of the Month!)

Presenting part two of servicing a client’s Pioneer Automatic Return Model PL-516 turntable: Calibrating the speed and checking mechanisms.

I always calibrate the speed of turntables during servicing to ensure records spin at the correct rpm. If the speed is too fast or slow it will distort the sound and change your listening experience. Exact speed calibration also helps protect your records as it lessens unnecessary friction between the stylus and the record.

Next I check any other mechanisms which can change depending on the turntable. The automatic return on this turntable is very neat!

Stay tuned for part three!

Presenting part one of servicing a client’s Pioneer Automatic Return Model PL-516 turntable: Dismantling!

Have you always wondered what happens during a standard turntable service? Wonder no more! I am starting a new series showing different parts of a standard service.

Dismantling is primarily the first step. I always need to get a good look inside a turntable's inner workings to ensure all the mechanisms are frictionless, and aligned correctly. Stay tuned for part two!

This stylus kept me a very busy bee! Stylus are not the only things I clean and service but they are one of the more delicate parts of the process. Thus, I take my time when cleaning them!

Sometimes home cleaning, with a stylus brush or gel cleaner, is not enough.
In the clip, I am cleaning a client’s stylus with an ultrasonic cleaner and special cleaning solution to get rid of stubborn built up grim.
