This Taonga is a little atua representing matauranga and its power.

The matauranga is represented by the head ratio, being the same size as the whole body.

The importance of this knowledge is represented through the use of Mangopare in the kowhaiwhai.
-
Niho kuri is placed on the shoulders and legs to represent the aspects of teaching - patience, consistency, and belief.

This Taonga is made from whale bone, mother of pearl and a brown waxed polyester adjustable braided cord.

This is freestyle carved figure, made from whale bone, Paua (abalone) inlayed eyes, 2 small tangiwai heads, and a black waxed polyester adjustable cord - iwituna whiri (8plait).

The figure itself is inspired by Ngati Pikiao carvings, the surface patterns include pakati - niho kuri, haehae, and waewae pākura.
-
This piece is also covered in a red dye, used in this case to symbolise the the land and our connection to our homelands.

There’s something special about carving S***m whale teeth. It’s a rare occasion for me, and I like it like that. The density, texture and glow is just outstanding. Comment s***m if you agree 🤣

The form itself is that of a Tooth. The main figure represents Rurutangiakau who was said to have many children, one of them being Akerautangi (The Taiaha) which can be identified bellow the stomach and between the legs.

There are 4 additional figures, the two at the top left and right, are twins, and the two below them represent the manu who hold and carry the matauranga.

The Takarangi design in this case is used to represent the wānanga of Mau Rakau itself and the wealth of knowledge that it provides.

White Pākeho from Kaikoura region - east coast of the South Island.

Yellow orange Garnet from Hokitika - west coast of the South Island.

Black Marble (Mapere) from Takaka Hill, top of the South Island ish.

Waikohatu from Whakatū (nelson) - top of the South Island.

Tahanga (basalt) from the mighty Wai-o-te-Marama stream Hokianga.

A student and the passing of knowledge.

This Taonga is made from Whale bone, Abalone inlays, an earthly red stain and a waxed polyester 8 plait adjustable cord.

This Tāonga incorporates a variation of the Takarangi pattern to encapsulate the passing of knowledge from generation to generation, master to student and student to master.

The Wheku (carved masks) either side are name Tika and Pono. As people and as practitioners, the path to enlightenment lies in our integrity.

Taratara a Kae is placed on the hands to show where the fruits of our labour comes from which is applied knowledge.

The pieces in between each figure are traditional reels made predominantly during the moa hunter period and used in a similar way on ancient adornment pieces.

In this case they are used to symbolised the link between the present moment and the past.

Here are two beautiful Taonga that I worked on recently. And what an amazing time it was.. pushing personal boundaries and attempting things I wouldn’t necessarily try was apart of this journey. Great learnings and Ready for the next 👍🏼

These two Taonga were cut from the same stone, carved side by side and finished together.. The two people who purchased them didn’t know each other but are living in the same city. They could have been in different parts of the world but instead, they ended up near each other.
