New Zealand Fantails can be quite vocal, their ‘cheep’ can be heard throughout the year. Their tails form a distinctive fan of white and grey feathers. They have an inquisitive friendliness about them and they happily forage in a range of habitats. The Fantail is known in Maori as Pīwakawaka.

Tui are recognizable by the distinctive tuft of white feathers on their black breasts. They are widespread and locally abundant on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. They can mimic the call of other birds, but also have their own unique call.
