On this day 13 October 1975, Dame Whina Cooper led the iconic Māori Land March to parliament.
Thousands joined the march from Te Hāpua to Parliament, carrying a petition signed by over 60,000 people.
The hīkoi challenged the on-going land loss, from 22 million acres of ownership to less than 4 million by the 1970s.
