In 1847, a London sweet-maker called Tom Smith started a tradition. He had no idea that 179 years later, we'd all still be pulling his idea across the Christmas table, groaning at the joke and wearing the paper hat at a jaunty angle until pudding.
That's the thing about traditions. Nobody sits down and decides to make one. You do something lovely one Christmas, then again the next, and before you know it the kids are 30 and still insisting it isn't Christmas until the crackers come out.
So what you do this year matters. It's the bit that gets carried forward.
Our gold-medal-winning* reusable crackers are made to be carried forward. Pull them apart with a BANG, slide them back together, pack them away with the decorations and bring them out again next year. And the year after that. Fill them with things people actually want: a tiny jar of jam, a square of homemade fudge, a lip balm, a wee dram. Add our reusable cotton crowns and your family's worst jokes. Over the years, the fabric becomes part of your Christmas, the way Grandma's tablecloth is part of hers.
Every set is handmade by women at our little factory in Kabul, Afghanistan, so the tradition you start this year carries something good for them too.
Tom Smith started a tradition in 1847. This Christmas, start yours.
