What’s the difference between a coffin and a casket?

A coffin is wider at the shoulders and tapers toward the feet, while a casket is rectangular (and typically features a hinged lid).

The right choice comes down to personal preference, values, and the story you want to tell.

🌱 Planting Update 🌱

Without what nature gives us, what we do wouldn’t be possible.

That is why, through our partnership with Trees That Count, we’re helping nurture new growth, planting 2 trees for every coffin or casket sold.

This means we’re giving back more than we use — depending on the species, two native trees can produce enough timber for 10 – 20 coffins.

Thanks to you, we’ve already planted 26 trees, removing the approximate CO2 of 6 Auckland to Sydney return flights.

Most importantly, we’re helping regenerate habitats across Aotearoa, supporting projects from Gisborne to Taranaki, and Marlborough to Southland, including:

- Ruapaka Wetland Restoration
- Lloyd George Road Planting Project
- Silvan Forest
- River Run
- Pohara Ellis Creek Wetland Creation
- Tasman Environmental Trust (TET): planting in the Nelson-Tasman region
- Patea Coastal Biodiversity Project
- Motueka Catchment Collective
- Te Wai Parera Trust

A small but meaningful way to honour our environment. 🌳

Kia ora e te whānau! 🌿
This week we join in celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week 2025), from 15–21 Mahuru (September).

Having started in 1975, this year carries extra significance as the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

This year’s theme:
Ake ake ake – A forever language

Across Aotearoa, whānau, schools, and iwi-led initiatives are working hard to keep te reo alive, from kōhanga reo (language immersion preschools) to community programs for all ages.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

That’s why we’ve updated our website with detailed images showcasing the design features of each coffin, a labour of love that took some time to complete.

We hope this makes it easier for our customers to know exactly what to expect and feel confident in their choice.

Mālō ʻetau lava! 🌺

This week we join our Tongan whānau in celebrating Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga (Tonga Language Week 2025), from 17–23 August.

This year’s theme:
Ko 'etau lea, ko e fe’unu mahu’inga ia ki he mo’ui ‘a e Tonga
“Our language is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.”

Funerals (Matenga) are another vital strand of Tongan culture, and we feel privileged to support Tongan families in honouring their loved ones.

If you’re considering one of our coffins for your loved one, there are some clear advantages to our selection that you may not be aware of.

For example, all our coffins (& caskets) feature a hinged split-lid design. This means an open casket funeral requires only partial embalming, not a full embalming.

For more information, please visit our website.

Noble Coffin sells a growing selection online of funeral coffins and caskets direct to customers in New Zealand. Lower prices than funeral homes. Shop now and save up to 80% today. Open 24/7, call anytime. Fast, free NZ shipping.
