Microplastics are everywhere; they’re even turning up inside our bodies and could seriously impact our health. If you want to reduce your exposure, there are simple ways to do so. Here are some suggestions – better for your health and our planet’s.
Kitchen swaps:
- Invest in a stainless steel kettle without internal plastic features (temperature plays a major role in the release of microplastics and chemicals).
- Use cast iron or stainless steel cookware.
- Consider trading your plastic containers and keep cups for glass or ceramic options, and only use ceramic or glass for microwaving food.
- Choose wooden cutting boards, dish brushes, and natural-fibre kitchen cloths.
Homeware & clothing:
- Select homewares (eg. carpet and cushions) made from natural fibre and vacuum regularly: this will reduce dust particles carrying microplastics.
- Opt for 100% natural fibre clothing, eg. wool, silk, linen, h**p & cotton (certified organic cotton is best as it is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers).
Body care
Many personal care & household products contain microplastics, including synthetic fragrances, detergents, and air fresheners. These chemicals can enter the body through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion.
- Consider switching to bar soap, shampoo or conditioner bars. Our GoodFor soaps are 100% natural & additive-free!
- Toothpaste in a jar (sans the plastic tube) is great. For period care, consider tampons made from organic materials such as cotton & bamboo, as around 90% of period products contain plastic.
Ditch the packaging
- Buy food loose or in glass containers, & refill from our bulk bins.
- Choose loose tea leaves over teabags (many contain plastic, although some are plastic-free)
- Microplastics have been found in town water supplies and bottled water - filter or distill your water, & use stainless or glass water bottles.
Choose whole foods
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) contain significantly more microplastics than whole foods because they come into contact with plastics during production and packaging. We’re passionate about whole foods at GoodFor - they’re more nutritious and involve far less packaging, so a better choice all around!
