Self Contained New Zealand SCNZ is an issuing authority for Self-containment in New Zealand. What we do? We can even supply you with kits and appliances that you can install yourself.

We have a nationwide network of Self-containment vehicle inspectors to guide you through the certification process. Here at SCNZ in Auckland we specialize in the sale, conversion and rental of certified self-contained vehicles. We have onsite qualified self-containment officers to assist in the compliance process and carry out full camper van and motorhome conversions. Found out more in our online shop! What is self-containment and why do you need it? Having your vehicle certified self-contained allows you to take full advantage of New Zealands most remote, beautiful and best of all FREE designated camping areas. A certified self-contained vehicle must comply with all of the NZS 5465 regulations and essentially be able to accommodate its inhabitants ablutionary and sanitary needs for a minimum of three days without any waste products being expelled into the environment. Self-contained camper vans are accepted as being more environmentally friendly than your average camper van. Therefore, New Zealand and local counsels reward you with free campsite options that only allow self-contained vehicles, so you to explore further.

The core of the setup featured in our video is the Fresh Water Tank 25 Litre With Hose. Made from a non-corroding, opaque material, these 25L tanks are suitable for both fresh and grey water. The tank dimensions are 450mm high by 275mm deep by 275mm wide, providing enough capacity for self-containment for 2 people. 📍 Taupo - 2 Mile Bay Wake up with Tongariro across the water and Ruapehu on the horizon. This is the backyard we forget we have. 🚿 D/S: 2 Mile Bay Boat Ramp, Rainbow Point - free, purpose-built. ⛺ Free camp: Whakaipo Bay Recreation Reserve, ~10 min away - self-contained only, huge lakefront spots.

📍 Rotorua - Lake Tarawera, Boat Shed Bay Native bush, still water, zero crowds. Tarawera doesn't need a filter. 🚿 D/S: Boatshed Bay Public Dumpstation, right at Kariri Point - free, on the boat ramp. ⛺ Free camp: Hamurana Reserve, ~20 min from Rotorua - lakeside, on-site toilets, self-contained only.

📍 Katikati - Uretara Domain Bay of Plenty backroads, orchards either side, Karangahake Gorge just up the road. Slow travel, done right. 🚿 D/S: right there on-site at Uretara Domain - free dump + potable water. ⛺ Free camp: Uretara Domain itself - up to 3 nights, self-contained only. Camp and dump in the same spot.

📍 Whitianga - Coromandel Cathedral Cove is a 20-minute drive away and Hot Water Beach is closer than you think. Some detours are the whole point. 🚿 D/S: Whitianga Public Dump Station, off SH25 - free. ⛺ Free camp: Lee Street Car Park, central Whitianga - self-contained only, walk to town. Or Coroglen Reserve for something quieter, ~20 min away.

📍 Kawakawa - Bay of Islands Yes, the toilets are famous. But the real reason to stop is what's fifteen minutes further - the Bay in all its glory. 🚿 D/S: on-site at the Hundertwasser Carpark - free dump + water supply. ⛺ Free camp: same spot - camp right where you dump, self-contained only, showers on offer too.

Craving quiet over crowds? Here's your loop up the wild north of the Coromandel - free camps, big scenery, and exactly where to dump before you commit to the remote stretch. 🌊🌿

📍 1. Coroglen Reserve Free. Self-contained only. Riverside spot for kayaking, swimming & fishing -max 5 vans, so it never feels crowded. 🚿 Dump: Whitianga Public Dump Station, ~20–25 min away via SH25.

📍 2. Waikawau South End Reserve Free council freedom camp, self-contained only, right on the beach with sunset views. Little traffic noise after dark. 🚿 Dump: same Patukerikeri Reserve station in Coromandel Town - best done on your way in.

📍 3. Waikawau Bay / Colville Road area Remote, unsealed roads toward Port Charles & Fletcher Bay - proper back-to-nature isolation. 🚿 Dump: also Patukerikeri Reserve, Coromandel Town - the furthest of the three, so top up water & empty tanks before the drive north. ⚠️

Two dump stations cover this loop: Whitianga for Coroglen, Coromandel Town for the Waikawau/Colville stretch - sort your tanks before you head to the remote spots, not after.

Got the self-contained certification? Here's your loop through some of the South Island's most epic free camps, plus exactly where to dump so you're never caught out. 🏔️💦
📍 1. Lake Pukaki Campervan Reserve Free. Self-contained only. Wake up to Aoraki/Mt Cook reflected in glacier-blue water, no filter needed. 🚿 Dump: Twizel's public dump station, 10–15 min away by the Shell station on Ruataniwha St. Free & purpose-built.

📍 2. Lake Wardell, near Twizel Free, sheltered, tucked beside trees and a hydro canal, quieter than Pukaki but still close to town. 🚿 Dump: same Twizel public station. Basically why this spot works so well.

📍 3. Glenorchy area (Dart & Rees Valleys) Free freedom camping outside the Queenstown buzz, framed by seriously big mountains. 🚿 Dump: the catch, Glenorchy is limited-service. Nearest dump is ~46km / 50–60 min back toward Queenstown (Frankton/NPD area). Dump before you head up, not after. ⚠️

To meet the new green warrant requirements, all vehicles now require a toilet that is permanently fixed to the vehicle. This ensures compliance with the self-containment legislation while maintaining flexibility in small spaces.

Fortunately, making this upgrade is easy and doesn't require replacing your entire toilet setup if you already have a portable one. By using a specially designed toilet bracket, you can securely fasten your portable toilet to your vehicle.
