Our goal is to provide the best service to all of our wonderful customers. We stock and provide advice Who are we?

We are a bunch of enthusiastic kayakers and outdoors nuts who are more than happy to help you out with any questions and match you to the perfect kayak and roof rack solution to suit your needs. We are out there doing it, testing the products that we sell so that you know exactly what you're getting into. We provide a range of kayaking skills courses to make you more confident and ensure you have the knowledge to enjoy this hobby for life. We provide advise covering most aspects of kayaking, from Fishing to White Water, Multisport to Surfing, we can match the kayak and gear to your ultimate adventure. Our other expertise lies with fitting roof racks to your vehicle. We can fit a rack to almost all cars, and have all the accessories available to carry whatever you need! We specialise in permanent mount roof racks, where you can customize the way your rack is fitted, looks and functions.

How you hold your paddle can make a huge difference to how efficiently you move through the water. Check these things next time you’re out...

🛶 Your hands shouldn’t be too close together: A good starting point is to hold the paddle above your head with your elbows bent at roughly 90 degrees.

🛶 Keep your grip relaxed: You don’t need to squeeze the shaft. A tight grip tires out your hands, wrists and forearms much faster.

🛶 Check your blade direction: If your paddle has asymmetrical blades, the longer edge generally sits at the top and the shorter edge at the bottom.

🛶 Use your whole upper body: Your arms guide the paddle, but most of your power should come from rotating through your torso rather than pulling with your arms alone.

Small adjustments to your grip and technique can lead to more efficient strokes, less fatigue and a much better day on the water. Save this one and check your grip on your next paddle.

Winter kayaking often means stronger winds, colder water and more unpredictable conditions.
Here's what to watch out for:
🌧️ Wind and swell can build quickly, so always check the forecast before heading out.
🌧️ Shorter daylight hours means less margin for error.
🌧️ Cold water can increase risk if something goes wrong.

So what can you do to manage it?
🛶 Choose sheltered locations and stay closer to shore.
🛶 Paddle within your limits- winter isn’t necessarily the time to push it.
🛶 Have a clear plan for your route and return.

A lot of paddlers grip the paddle way too tightly without realising it. Usually it happens when people feel unstable, paddle into wind, or try to “muscle through” the water. The problem is it creates tension through your wrists, forearms, shoulders, and upper back, which makes you tire out much faster.
A relaxed grip gives you:
- Smoother paddle strokes
- Better rotation
- Less fatigue
- More control in rougher water
One of the easiest ways to improve endurance in a kayak is simply learning where tension doesn’t need to exist.

Taupō, March 2003. A multi-day trip with the Yakity Yak crew through the Western Bays, led by paddlers who knew the area and were keen to share it. Long paddles, trout caught along the way, gear swapped, techniques picked up, and places reached that would’ve been hard to find solo.

Landing in surf requires technique. There are 3 main types:
🛶 Front landing: Paddle ahead of the wave so it breaks behind you. Keep your rudder down to help position yourself before catching the wave. If your bow dips, tilt the kayak to free it or use the stern to turn sideways and slide down the wave.
🛶 Middle landing: Ride the wave like a surfboard, turning slightly to avoid white water. This gives you control and keeps your kayak from flipping.
🛶 Back landing: Let the wave break ahead of you and float in calmly. Good for bigger surf or when learning.
Pro tip - practice each method in moderate waves before bigger surf. Knowing all 3 approaches gives you flexibility and confidence in any condition! Follow for more kayaking tips and tricks.
