Three years ago, I took a pretty big leap and opened Four Square Onehunga.

Since then, I’ve poured an enormous amount of my life into this little store, taken risks, borrowed money, worked some crazy hours, built an amazing team of local people and kept putting everything we can back into making this store better.

But what I’m most proud of is what we’ve built with Onehunga.
Onehunga has backed us from day one, and we’ve tried to return that support as much as we can through schools, charities, sports clubs, community groups, local events and just being there for our customers every day.

And we’ve had the backing of our co-op. That collective buying, distribution and support across all parts of the business helps a little store like ours compete with the big supermarkets, while trying to be something different as your convenient, fresh, friendly local.

Foodstuffs doesn’t own Four Square Onehunga. I do. When something breaks, sales drop or roadworks make it harder for customers to get to us, that doesn't land on the desk of some distant corporate owner. It lands with me.

I absolutely want groceries to be more affordable, we all do. But that’s exactly why the proposal to split up our co-op has me so worried. I struggle to see how breaking apart the scale and support that helps small stores like ours compete will make things better or groceries cheaper for our customers?!

For me, this has always been about building a store for Onehunga.
And three years in, I’m incredibly proud of what we’re building together and we’ll keep turning up every day, competing hard to be your fresh and convenient local Four Square.

Best Places to eat in ONEHUNGA

Onehunga Station is about to become more connected than ever, with the opening of City Rail Link on Sunday 13 September.
The Onehunga Line will be replaced with the Onehunga West (O-W) Line, creating new travel opportunities and better connections across the wider network.

During peak times, the O-W Line will run every 30 minutes from Onehunga to Grafton Station, and to Maungawhau Station - the redeveloped former Mt Eden Station.

During off-peak times, the O-W services will continue beyond the city and connect through to Henderson Station.

Customers travelling from Onehunga will have more options for reaching the city centre, with easy transfers available to transfer to services running through the CRL tunnels.
Time savings include, Onehunga to Maungawhau in just 24 minutes, and during off-peak times Onehunga to Henderson in 53 minutes.

The very first Onehunga West (O-W) Line train will be departing at 5.37am at Onehunga Station. It will arrive at Maungawhau Station at 6am.
