Yesterday we were filming for Kea Kids News & she was super confident, did everything that was asked of her & added a fair bit of sass to the episode.

Got ‘em - the crew from NZOFC headed down to Waihau Bay to East Coast Sportfishing Charters epic spot for Paul Minton birthday with Josh Newman Troy Mcgonagle Luke & Jamie. We headed out at 2am to start jigging in the dark & barged our way through about 149 other vessels to find bait balls around 110m deep & raised a couple of beauties (lost one unfortunately). Once sunlight hit we towed the lures & mowed the ocean & a nice 60-80kg SBT chomped the lure (pictured) - what an epic experience- I highly recommend getting in touch with Archie Ericksen-Hei from ECSCHARTERS whilst the bite is still hot -

This week, Paul and I were lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes look at the University of Auckland’s marine research facilities at Leigh.

As we venture further into the world of recreational fishing, we feel it’s important to learn as much as we can about our marine environment, the species we target, and how we can all play a part in restoring abundance to our oceans.

The work being done by the researchers is fascinating and serves as a great reminder that healthy fisheries don’t happen by accident—they require good science, good stewardship, and a community that cares.

A huge thank you to the team for sharing their knowledge and passion with us. We’re looking forward to bringing some of these learnings back to the NZOFC community. NZOFC Paul Minton
