"Before joining COOPARM, I was getting ripped off selling my coffee to street traders"

When the Trade Aid team visited COOPARM (Cooperativa Argaria Rodríguez de Mendoza) in Peru's Amazonas region earlier this year, we met coffee farmer Epifanio Arista (📸 Image 1) and heard firsthand how being a part of the co-operative has changed things for him and his family.

Epifanio has been a COOPARM member since 2007, growing coffee with his family on three hectares of land near Cochamal. Before joining, he was vulnerable to traders who would under-weigh his coffee or, in some cases, pay with counterfeit money. As a member of COOPARM, Epifanio has access to fair payment, community initiatives, and technical support from agronomists, helping him to improve his livelihood and the quality of his production.

The COOPARM difference goes beyond fair coffee trading, it allows members to invest in what matters most. For Epifanio, fair payment helps fund his children's education (his eldest son, 19, is now studying agronomy in Chachapoyas).

"I want to maintain the environment, and to be able to pass this farm onto my sons" Epifanio told us.

We also learned about the wider impact of COOPARM on its members and community. The co-operative has 549 members, and its newly elected board has, for the first time, more women than men.

For member Carmen Soto Lopez, the benefits are clear:

"Most of us have children, and as a priority we save money to fund their studies. We can now also eat better and get better health care."

COOPARM's women's group is also looking at how it can tackle the other local challenges, including poor dental health and access to dental services.

That's what sits behind fair trade: real people, community focused initiatives, and the opportunity to build something better for the next generation.

Big thanks to the Cooperativa Agraria Rodríguez De Mendoza team for your warm hospitality ❤️
We loved our time with you and can't wait to see you again soon!

Earlier this year, Justin, Laura and Annabell from Trade Aid travelled to Peru and visited the awesome team at Norandino - the producers behind our fair trade, organic Muscovado Sugar.

We've been proud to partner with Norandino for 12 years. Today, they represent over 7,000 farming families and drive community impact through climate resilience and reforestation initiatives.

The team chatted with Edison Cordova, a producer of Panela, to see how these initiatives are making a difference on the ground:

“When I was younger, sugar cane production was very hard and our returns were very poor. With the help of technical support from Norandino, we have improved the quality and quantity of the sugar we grow and we receive a better income. This extra income has in turn allowed us to invest better in our farms” – Edison Cordova

With climate challenges like the Super El Ninõ putting added pressure on farmers, practical techniques can make a huge difference. Edison shared how simple strategies like dense planting helps to keep soil moist and build climate-resilient crops.

Every spoonful of Muscovado Sugar helps support farmers, communities, and sustainable farming practices 🌱

Huge thank you to the Norandino team for your hospitality! We're looking forward to seeing you again soon ❤️

From a small savings co-op of just 39 members in 1975 to Paraguay’s first and only 100% farmer owned organic sugar mill, the Manduvirá Cooperative has grown into a community of 1,100 members. 🌱

Manduvirá’s story is about much more than sugar - it is a powerful reminder that when producers have the opportunity to shape their own future through fair trade, the impact can reach far beyond the farm - strengthening families, communities and generations to come. ❤️

When our Fair Trading Manager, Justin Purser, and HR & Compliance Manager, Laura Colbert, visited Manduvirá in Paraguay, they saw first hand how fair trade can empower entire communities across generations.

During their visit, Justin and Laura met local sugar cane farmers Gilberto and Maria, who shared their daughter Andrea’s inspiring journey. Through a scholarship from Manduvirá, Andrea is working toward her university degree with a goal of returning home, bringing her knowledge back to the cooperative, and helping lead the next generation of sustainable sugar production. 💪

As the pioneers of Fair Trade in New Zealand it is our duty to stand up against trade injustice, and we need your help to do it.

Progress on the Modern Slavery Bill has stalled and we are calling on the Government to pass the Modern Slavery Bill before the election.

The Bill has strong cross-party support and most MPs have backed the Bill.

This legislation helps to protect people exploited to produce the goods and services we buy and use every day. Their dignity and freedom demand action.

Christopher Luxon, your government can give this Bill the priority it needs to pass into law before Parliament rises.

Do not let the clock run out on modern slavery legislation.

Stand with us. Share this open letter. Add your voice. Urge the Government to finish the job.

Long-term partnerships are at the heart of fair trade. ❤️

Facilitating these relationships means getting out from behind our desks and visiting our trading partners in person. This is a great opportunity to share ideas, talk through opportunities and challenges, and make sure fair trading principles are upheld every step of the way.

Earlier this year, Justin, Laura, Callum and Annabell headed to South America to spend time with some of our partners.

14 flights, a few lost bags, countless delicious meals, and multiple mosquito bites later… they’re back home and we’re ready to put their learnings into action!

Here are a few of behind the scenes vids from their trip. 📸

A huge thank you to our friends at Manduvira, ANEI, COOPROAGRO, COOPARM and Norandino for the warm welcome and hospitality. We can’t wait to see you again soon! ❤️

"Together we can achieve more." 💚

During our visit to Colombia, we had the privilege of meeting Clarena Martinez; a 3rd-generation coffee grower and cooperative member.

From protecting local ecosystems to empowering women and youth in the Atanque community, Clarena tells us what fair trade means to the ANEI community.

You can find Colombian beans in our Better Day and Impact blends ❤️☕️

Trade Aid began over 52 years ago as a grassroots movement driven by volunteer activism. We were built by passionate people determined to create tangible, real-world change.

Today, that legacy continues. Our volunteers educate New Zealand consumers about the power of their spending, unpack and pick stock, meticulously label products, champion advocacy initiatives, and govern our entire movement.

To all our volunteers, past and present: thank you for your incredible years of service and your dedication to fair trade. We wouldn't be here without you.

📷 Pioneering volunteers Richard Cottrell, Vi Cottrell, and Lyn Jackson at one of our very first board meetings, deep in discussion about handicraft orders, political turmoil, and tackling poverty through trade justice.

Our team has been busy visiting our sugar, cocoa, and coffee fair trading partners across South America! 🌎

Here’s a sneak peek of their time with Cooperativa Manduvirá Ltda., the producers behind our organic, fair trade golden sugar. ✨

Big thanks to the Manduvirá team for your incredible hospitality! We’re already counting down the days until we can visit again. ❤️

We’ll be sharing plenty more photos of our travels once the team is back home, so keep your eyes peeled! 👀
