Returning from Taipei to the Ciyakang community in Hualien, Truku q***r writer Apyang Imiq’s journey home is more than a geographical migration; it is also a process of reconnecting with his community.

Back in his hometown, he began relearning his Indigenous language, working the land in the mountains, and felt his body and mind being reshaped by the community. Through close-knit community relationships distinct from the anonymity of the city, he also sought places where his different identities—including being Indigenous and being q***r—could find a sense of belonging.

𝙄 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙬 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 (我長在打開的樹洞) and 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 (大腿山) are two works Apyang completed at different stages after he returned home. Published in 2021 and awarded Best New Author at the Taiwan Literature Awards, the essay collection 𝙄 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙬 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 delicately documents his early attempts to find his place upon returning home, as well as how, through physical labor, he rebuilt a bond with the land. Published in 2025, 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 turns to the fictional world of the novel to explore the emotions, desires, and forms of love that unfold within the community.

As part of , Apyang will join us in person to share his writing and discuss the evolving relationship between himself and his community.

從台北回到花蓮的支亞干部落，太魯閣族酷兒作家 Apyang Imiq 程廷的返鄉之路不僅是一次地理上的遷徙，更是一場重新「進入」部落的歷程。回到家鄉，他重新學習族語，拿起鋤頭走入山林，感受自己的身心被部落再次塑形，也從與匿名都市不同的人際網絡中，尋找「原住民」與「同志」等不同身分的安放之處。

《我長在打開的樹洞》和《大腿山》是程廷兩部在返鄉不同時期完成的作品。在2021年出版並榮獲台灣文學獎蓓蕾獎的散文作品《我長在打開的樹洞》中，程廷以細膩的文字記錄下初返部落的摸索，以及他如何透過身體的勞動，與這片土地重新建立血脈相連的羈絆。而2025年出版的《大腿山》，則以小說的虛構時空，探索部落的情感、慾望與愛。

本次 #台灣季・在世界之間 活動，程廷將親自來到紐西蘭飛地，與我們分享他的寫作，以及他和部落關係的流轉。

“Austronesian” has evolved beyond a linguistic concept into an identity through which people explore and articulate questions such as “Who am I?” and “What is my relationship to the world?” Yet constructing such an identity also means navigating the intersections and tensions between indigeneity, ethnicity, nationhood, colonialism, and decolonisation.

Taiwan is regarded as an important point of origin for Austronesian migrations that began more than 5,000 years ago. Since the 2000s, “Austronesian” has become a framework through which Indigenous peoples in Taiwan have sought to rediscover themselves and reconnect with the Pacific world.

At the other end of this migratory history is the lesser-known Norfolk Island, an Australian territory located northwest of New Zealand’s North Island. Its inhabitants are descendants of 18th-century British sailors and Tahitian women, whose descendants relocated to the island in 1856. In a sense, this relocation can be seen as one of the final waves of migration of the Austronesian peoples. Although they are not “Indigenous” in the conventional sense, today they draw on their Tahitian matrilineal ancestry, as well as song and dance traditions, in an effort to establish a place for themselves within the Pacific community.

From an early point of departure to a modern endpoint in this migratory history, these two islands raise a shared question: Is identity rooted in ancestry, language, history, or culture—or can it also be reinterpreted and reconstructed in other ways in the contemporary world?

For the second public talk of in Nowhere Aotearoa, Hao-Li Lin, Associate Professor at National Tsing Hua University, whose long-term research focuses on contemporary Austronesian issues, will take Taiwan and Norfolk Island as two seemingly distant yet resonant case studies. He will explore how the idea of an “Austronesian world” has been continually imagined and redefined at the intersections of colonial history, ethnic identity, and contemporary Pacific relations—and how an “Austronesian” identity can transcend ethnic and national boundaries to become a bond connecting communities across the Pacific.

台灣被視為五千多年前南島語族遷徙的重要起點。2000年後，「南島」逐漸成為台灣原住民族重新認識自身、連結太平洋世界的框架。另一端的諾福克島在這故事中較不為人知，是位於紐西蘭北島西北方、距離奧克蘭1100公里的澳洲屬地。島民是十八世紀英國船員和大溪地女性通婚的後裔，於1856年移居於此，某種程度上可以說是南島語族圖像中的最後一波遷徙。他們並不是傳統意義上的「原住民」，如今憑藉著大溪地母系系譜和歌舞，設法在太平洋社群中找到一席之地。

從遷徙的「起點」到近代的「末端」，這兩座島嶼共同提出一個問題：身分是來自血緣、語言、歷史或文化，還是也能以其他方式在當代被重新理解和建立？

#台灣季・在世界之間 紐西蘭站第二場講座活動，任教於國立清華大學人類學研究所、長期研究當代南島議題的副教授林浩立，將從台灣與諾福克島兩個看似遙遠、卻彼此呼應的案例出發，帶我們理解「南島世界」如何在殖民歷史、族群認同和當代太平洋關係之間，被不斷想像與定義；「南島語族」這個身分，又如何能跨越民族和國族的界線，成為連結太平洋世界的紐帶。

“The South” has often taken on meanings far beyond geography in historical and political contexts. For Taiwan, “the South” once signified the periphery of empire and the frontier of colonial expansion, where the people who inhabited the land were objects to be classified, defined, and written about. In recent years, “the South” has offered Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples a perspective from which to explore their indigeneity and connections with the Austronesian world. This perspective, along with Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences, has become increasingly visible in Taiwanese literature, music, cinema, and television.

As Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples carve out a growing space as storytellers through generations of efforts to reclaim their histories and assert their own voices, how does Taiwanese popular culture draw on “the South” to reflect the diversity and complexity of the island’s intertwined peoples, cultures, and histories?

For the first public talk of in Nowhere Aotearoa, Dr Chia-rong Wu, Associate Professor in the Department of Global, Cultural and Language Studies at the University of Canterbury, whose research focuses on Sinophone and Taiwanese literature, will draw on Taiwan’s history, literature, and contemporary culture to explore how “the South” has evolved from an imperial imaginary into a pathway through which Taiwan reposition itself and forge new connections with the Austronesian world.

「南方」作為一個地理方位，在不同的歷史和政治脈絡中，常常被賦予更多意義。對台灣而言，「南方」正是一個不斷被重新想像的概念。它曾意味著帝國的邊陲，是殖民擴張的前線，土地上的人是被歸類、定義、書寫的對象。近幾年，「南方」則提供了尋找台灣和世界連結的視角：當目光從大陸轉向海洋，當這座島嶼被置於東南亞、太平洋和南島世界的座標之中，它成為了不同族群、文化與歷史彼此交會的節點。

近年台灣的大眾文化中，出現愈來愈多重新思考台灣歷史及與世界關係的作品，海洋和島嶼漸漸成為重要的敘事空間與隱喻。與此同時，原住民的歷史、文化與當代處境，也愈來愈多地進入藝文作品之中。文學從夏曼・藍波安的《八代灣的神話》到Nakao Eki Pacidal的《蕉葉與樹的約定》，電影從《賽德克・巴萊》到近年的《哈勇家》、《獵人兄弟》，小說改編電視劇則從《斯卡羅》到《八尺門的辯護人》⋯⋯

當原住民逐漸取回對自身的敘事權、原住民議題和南島文化受到更多關注，台灣社會也在重新思考：誰是台灣故事的主角？誰可以述說台灣的歷史？而這座島嶼內部多元族群、文化與歷史交織出的異質性與複雜性，又該如何被表達？

#台灣季・在世界之間 紐西蘭站第一場講座活動，在紐西蘭坎特伯雷大學任教、研究華語及台灣文學的副教授吳家榮，將從台灣歷史、文學與當代文化出發，介紹「南方」如何從帝國的想像，逐漸成為台灣重新定位自身、連結南島世界的一條路徑。

誰決定一個社群要在哪裡、何時，劃出一條區分你我的界線？我們是否能將「移動」視為文化的構成要素，將族群視為一種互動而開放的「形成過程」？所謂的「文化」與「邊界」並非先於接觸而存在，是透過接觸才得以維持。我們不會永遠被自己的「身分」所固定，但也不可能擺脫所屬的族群、文化、階級與歷史。在這個愈來愈連結、也愈來愈流動的世界，異質的人群、糾經的文化經驗，將發展出怎樣的可能性？

【Update ✨：導演 Ado 阿洛 將會加入映後連線，同大家分享製作此綜藝的幕後歷程和心得～】

這部以「南島連結」為主題的音樂綜藝節目，第一季於疫情期間展開製作。導演阿洛邀請同樣來自台灣東部阿美族部落的音樂創作人 Suming 舒米恩、A-Lin，與紐西蘭毛利音樂人展開交流。導演希望能從學理以外的角度，透過音樂與創作者之間的對話，探索「南島連結」意味著什麼。

然而受疫情期間旅行限制影響，第一季的跨國交流只能透過視訊遠距進行。到了第二季《女人島》，節目得以邀請台灣原住民音樂人以莉．高露親赴紐西蘭，與毛利音樂人 Maisey Rika 展開面對面的交流。

🌊 你知道 #南島語族 嗎？一個語言學概念，是如何成為一種既關於本土、又超越本土的身分認同？九月，「 #台灣季・在世界之間」系列活動來到紐西蘭飛地，我們將一起探索關於南島語族和台灣的故事！

南島語族（Austronesian）是指使用南島語系語言的族群，分布從台灣、東南亞，延伸到廣大的太平洋和印度洋島嶼，其中包括台灣原住民、毛利人和許多太平洋島民。數千年來，這些族群帶著自己的語言和文化不斷跨海移動，在不同島嶼落腳定居，又在各自的環境和歷史脈絡中發展出當代多元的面貌。這些各不相同、卻有著深遠連結的族群，共同構成了今天我們所理解的「南島世界」。

「南島語族」這個身分並不等同於在殖民關係中形成的「原住民」概念，對使用南島語的不同族群來說，重要性也不盡相同。但在近年的台灣社會，「南島」逐漸成為人們重新思考台灣歷史、原住民處境和去殖民可能性的框架：在一個以漢語為主流語言的社會裡，族語為南島語的原住民處在什麼位置？他們的故事是什麼？他們的視角又會如何讓我們重新理解台灣？

台灣原住民爭取土地、正名和自治權的社會運動，在1980年代隨著台灣民主化浪潮同步興起，原住民議題越來越多出現在公共討論中，在大眾藝文作品裡也有了越來越多樣的呈現。近年來，原住民積極建構南島認同、以南島語族身分連結同樣在面對去殖民議題的太平洋社群，例如舉辦各種以「南島」為主題的藝文活動、代表台灣參與太平洋地區的國際交流（像是四年一度的太平洋藝術節）。在這身分被持續協商與想像的過程中，我們得以看見：從個體到群體，我們都可以透過講述自己的故事、與他人建立連結，不斷塑造對自身、以及自身與世界之間關係的理解。

飛地nowhere 希望從 #台灣季 的每個活動空間在地的歷史、文化與當代問題出發，打開理解台灣的一個入口。紐西蘭和台灣同處於南島世界、同樣在積極建構去殖民和太平洋身分。在這裡，我們將透過書展、一場放映和兩場講座，認識台灣和南島世界的連繫，也一起思考：在一個越來越流動、彼此交織的世界裡，我們如何理解、敘述自己的身分，又如何在與他人的相遇之中，不斷成為我們自己？

🌊 Have you heard of the term “Austronesian”? It refers to the massive language family that stretches from Taiwan and Southeast Asia across the vast islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Māori, many Pacific peoples, and Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples speak languages belonging to this family, linking communities across an extraordinary geographical span.

Indigenous peoples in Taiwan have been fighting for land rights, recognition of their names, and self-governance since the 1980s alongside Taiwan’s democratisation movements. Indigenous issues have become increasingly visible in public discussions and represented in more diverse ways across popular arts and culture.

As Indigenous issues have gained greater visibility locally, Taiwan’s Indigenous communities are also embracing the Austronesian identity to build connections with the Pacific world. “Austronesian” has become a framework through which people rethink Taiwan’s history and imagine the possibilities of decolonisation. In a society where Mandarin is the dominant language, where do Austronesian-speaking Indigenous peoples stand? What are their stories? And how might their perspectives change the way we understand Taiwan itself?

is a travelling programme hosted by 飛地nowhere . We hope to explore Taiwan by bringing it into dialogue with each place the programme visits. This September, the programme comes to Aotearoa, where the linguistic connections between Māori and Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples open up broader questions about Indigenous identities, decolonisation, and relationships across the Pacific.

By placing Taiwan and Aotearoa in conversation, we ask: what does “Austronesian” mean beyond a linguistic classification? How has it come to shape the ways people understand Taiwan, connect with the Pacific, and imagine identities that are at once deeply local and transnational?
