🏆 Gold at the NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards 2026! 🍦

Huge congratulations to Redvelvet Gelato, right here on our mainstreet, who has taken home Gold in the RD2 International Best of Fusion category at the 2026 NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards!

Their winning creation, Paan Kaju Katli Royale, brings together the fragrant, aromatic notes of paan with the rich sweetness of kaju katli (an Indian cashew fudge sweet) and a touch of royal spicing — turned into gelato.

The awards were judged blind by a panel of 30 food industry professionals, with the head judge highlighting the incredible diversity of flavours entered this year.

🏗️ You've probably noticed more housing construction in and around Mainstreet, new housing continues going up right in the heart of Avondale.

We love to see it. More homes near the shops and cafés means more people who can walk to grab a coffee, run errands, or just enjoy the town centre without needing the car, a proper walkable Mainstreet taking shape right here.

🛝 THE NEW DESTINATION PLAYGROUND IS COMING! 🛝

The Whau Local Board has just approved the concept design for the new playground at Avondale Central Reserve next to Te Hono.

This is looking like a genuine destination playground: a custom 3-storey play tower for all ages, water play with misters and jets, a learn-to-ride wheeled play track, a youth fitness space, our full-size basketball court retained (with pickleball lines added!), swings, climbing nets and a junior play mound, plus picnic tables, BBQs and shaded seating.

It's fully accessible and has been shaped by our community, 53 children from Friends of Avondale Primary the Whau Youth Board and mana whenua all had a hand in what's being built.

It'll also connect into the new Te Hono community facility taking shape right next door.

The Avondale Business Association has been advocating for years for a real destination playground on our mainstreet, somewhere that brings families in and gives them a reason to stay, shop and linger in Avondale.

When this project was first announced it was funded at $1.7 million. Seeing the Whau Local Board commit more funds to expand the size and quality of the playground, bringing the budget to $2.76 million, is the kind of investment our mainstreet needs.

📅 What's next: resource consent and detailed design over the coming months, with construction targeted to start November 2026 and the playground opening around March 2027.
