Why did I start Kara Kawa?

People often ask how Kara Kawa began, and the truth is, it started long before I ever made my first balm.

I grew up in one of New Zealand's most remote and beautifully preserved places, the Marlborough Sounds.

The outdoors wasn't somewhere we visited... it was our playground.

As kids, my brother and I spent countless hours exploring the bush, foraging for food and discovering the incredible native plants growing around us. We'd create all sorts of weird and wonderful concoctions, completely fascinated by what nature could provide.

Looking back, that's where my love for plants and their natural healing properties first began.

As I got older, that curiosity never disappeared. I found myself wanting to learn more about botanical ingredients, how they worked, and how they could be used to care for our skin naturally.

But there was something that kept bothering me.

Natural skincare was often expensive. Really expensive.

I believed people shouldn't have to choose between quality and affordability. Everyone deserves access to skincare made with genuine, effective ingredients, without paying luxury prices.

So I decided to create my own.

Today, every Kara Kawa product is still carefully formulated, tested and handcrafted by me in small batches in my purpose-built workshop here in New Zealand.

I take my time developing each product because I want every ingredient to have a purpose. No unnecessary fillers. No harsh chemicals. Just carefully selected ingredients that work together to support healthy skin.

My unique kawakawa extraction process takes a minimum of four weeks, allowing the leaves to slowly infuse into nourishing oils and capture as much of the plant's goodness as possible. It's not the quickest way to do it, but I believe it's worth the wait.

What started as a childhood fascination with nature has grown into something I'm incredibly proud of.

Every order that leaves my workshop is a little piece of that journey, and I'm so grateful to everyone who has supported Kara Kawa along the way.
