🌿 What if health goals didn't start with a scale?

What if they started with a garden?

Maybe health looks like:

- Adding more vegetables to your meals.
- Spending 20 minutes outside each day.
- Learning a new skill.
- Finding moments of peace amongst the busyness.
- Growing something with your children.

Gardening has taught me that growth doesn't happen overnight.

The same is true for our health and wellbeing.

Small, consistent changes have a way of transforming our lives.

What is one thing you'd like to cultivate this season?

My son told me this was the best lamb dish he's ever had! I'll take that!
Slow cooked lamb shanks with mash potatoes and broccoli. Roasted off initially in the oven then finished off in the slow cooker. Want the recipe? Let me know in the comments and I'll share them tomorrow.

One thing I've noticed with all the "advice" out there is that some of it is about eating less, eating as much protein as possible and remove sugar from your diet but add honey or maple syrup (which by the way is still bloody sugar). But there's two things I've noticed about myself as to why I reach for sweet treats.
1. I didn't eat enough of the stuff that fills me for a longer time. That includes protein, but also fat and fibre. Those are the two things that actually satiate you. Fat is important for us as we head into perimenopause because of how much change we go through during those years. It protects us!
2. Eating as quickly as possible after we wake. We've already slept 8 hours, stopped eating at 7pm so 12 hours is sufficient to give our body a break from food. If I dont eat breakfast, its 2 or 3pm before I eat, and then I need serious food now and that's when you reach for sugary food for a quick top up.
I keep going back to a really basic breakfast. Homemade muesli, yoghurt and fresh fruit like kiwifruit (P.s. its not kiwi its kiwifruit). Why? I get a good amount of fibre (add chia seeds for more), good food for my gut with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, protein and some carbs (wholegrain oats are best as it takes longer for the body to digest)
3. Planning food. After a busy day at work, Im exhausted and dont want to think any longer. Honestly every time I don't do this, my budget goes out of whack, my stress levels go up, and energy goes down because I am eating crap. So plan 2 to 3 options for breakfast. 1 for when you are in a rush, 1 for when you have time and 1 thats a healthy version of your favourite. For me that includes bacon 🥓 😋. Plan your lunches giving yourself 1 to 2 options and plan your meals. Make extra, so you can freeze it for a night when you're too tired to cook. I've been doing this more and its making life so much easier.

🌱 Wondering what you can plant right now in the Waikato?

Winter doesn't mean the garden stops!

This month I'm planting:

🧄 Garlic
🌿 Parsley
🥬 Spinach
🥬 Silverbeet
🥬 Kale
🌱 Broad beans
🌱 Peas
🥕 Carrots
🌸 Calendula

Winter gardens might be slower, but they can still be incredibly productive.

Small steps count.

What are you planting this month?

Every time I make an apple dish, especially if they're organic apples, I save the cores and peels to make apple cider vinegar. I may need to stop doing this as I currently have two jars in progress and 4 litres bottled and in a cupboard.
Apple cider vinegar is super simple to make and if you'd like I'll share how I make it.
What you're seeing is the apple peels and cores in the liquid, bubbling away. This shows the process is working!
Let me know in the comments if you'd like me to show you how to make your own apple cider vinegar and I'll make a video, showing my process.

This is my fireplace and this is my fireplace roaring after the delivery of firewood from my sister and brother-in-law. I couldn't get over myself, so they brought me over some anyway! Almost brought to tears when I see their vehicle turn up! Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Love you guys x
