A stunning evergreen climbing plant with large, glossy, deeply divided dark green leaves that create a bold tropical look indoors or in sheltered outdoor areas.

Mature plants produce fragrant flowers followed by unique, fruit salad-flavoured edible fruit when grown in suitable conditions.

Growing Conditions

Prefers a bright, well-lit indoor position with indirect light.
Can also be grown outdoors in a warm, sheltered, frost-free location with well-drained soil.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, allowing it to become slightly drier during cooler months.
Feed with a slow-release fertiliser during spring and summer for healthy growth.

Taxodium distichum (Swamp Cypress)

Swamp Cypress is a striking deciduous conifer with an elegant pyramidal form, attractive fibrous reddish-brown bark, and a distinctive buttressed trunk. Although it is a conifer, it sheds its soft, feathery needles each winter after putting on a spectacular display of rich copper and golden autumn colour.

Native to wetlands, swamps, and floodplains, this remarkable tree is highly adaptable. It naturally thrives in waterlogged and periodically flooded conditions, where it may develop characteristic root “knees” that rise above the soil to aid oxygen exchange. It can tolerate standing water up to approximately 60 cm deep but also performs very well in ordinary garden soils.

With a moderate to fast growth rate of around 30–60 cm per year, Swamp Cypress reaches approximately 9 metres tall and 4 metres wide within its first 10 years under suitable conditions. At maturity, it can grow to around 20 metres tall and 10 metres wide, becoming a magnificent long-lived specimen tree that can survive for hundreds of years.

An elegant evergreen NZ native, developing into a slender tree with graceful spreading branches and with branches. Small, bronzy-green leaves provide good colour in winter.

Fuscospora solandri has black bark and grows slowly in a tiered shape, giving it a unique and attractive appearance.

It can be clipped to form a dense, fine, and tall formal hedge or shelterbelt.
Regular pruning and clipping will encourage the bushy, tight growth required for a solid privacy or boundary hedge.

Suits moderately fertile, well-drained soils at low altitude in drier eastern areas. Grows to 20 x 5m

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Gumball' (1.8m STD)

It has a dense, rounded ball-shaped growth habit and features maple-shaped leaves that turn brilliant shades of purple, orange, yellow, and red in the autumn.

What is noticeable is the show that arrives in Autumn and plays out for an extended period. The shades of yellow, red and burgundy are spectacular and they last until finally falling in mid-winter.

These leaves often persist well into the winter, providing an extended period of seasonal interest.

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Gumball' is an excellent choice as a street tree or for formal planting, and it does not produce seed capsules.

However, it's important to note that in dry soil, Liquidambar styraciflua 'Gumball' produces a taproot that helps reinforce it against wind.
