G’day team!
I’m uploading a pair of Makuta Icarax I’ve thrown together, aaand I can verify they have the correct Black 4-Hole! If you know, you know. If you don’t? Keep reading 😉
‘But PSPS!’ you cry; ‘all 4-Holes are Black!’
LIES. DECEPTION. A TRICK OF THE MAKUTA, A RUSE DESIGNED TO DECEIVE YOU!
These 2 Kraahkan pictured are officially different colours. I s**t you not. Let's dig in, shall we?
Short version:
There’s 2 different Black 4-Holes; Pearl Black and Black. Makuta Icarax released with a Black 4-Hole Kraahkan, but it somehow escaped attention that Teridax’s later runs released with a Pearl Black 4-Hole. Most 4-Holes floating around are actually from Teridax releases, not Icarax. Most mask displays are short 1 official Kraahkan variant, and most Icarax models rebuilt from lots have the wrong Kraahkan. Seriously. It’s like, 1 in 5. I am so, so sorry.
Long version:
Including the weirdo Mask of Power from Ultimate Dume, there are 6 officially released Kraahkan, and one prominent (arguably the most famous) mismould usually counted in a complete lineup. A while back, I fell ass-backwards into finding a forgotten 7th release variant and made it everyone’s problem.
The Kraahkan Master List, in release order:
- 6-Hole, Pearl Black (Makuta Teridax, 2003)
- 5-Hole (mismoulded 6-Hole), Pearl Black (Makuta Teridax, 2003)
- 4-Hole, Pearl Black (Makuta Teridax, 2003)
- Movie Edition, Black (Takutanuva, 2003)
- Mask of Power (Ultimate Dume, 2004)
- 4-Hole, Flat Dark Gold (Tower of Toa, 2005)
- 4-Hole, Pearl Gold (Tower of Toa, 2005)
- 4-Hole, Black (Makuta Icarax, 2009)
See the problem here? There’s 2 different black Kraahkan.
To condense a boring explanation down into a few key points:
- The original 6-Hole Kraahkan was a problem, and frequently produced the 5-Hole mismould
- Lego altered the mould during Makuta Teridax’s production run to fix it, producing the 4-Hole variant
- The 4-Holes produced during Makuta Teridax’s runs were made in Pearl Black, the same colour used for Vorahk’s head, feet, and back (as an aside, the head exists in Black too via Rahaga Bomonga!)
- Pearl Black was rarely used, and discontinued in 2006
- Makuta Icarax’s 4-Hole Kraahkan released in 2009, looong after the discontinuation of Pearl Black, and forced Lego to use regular ol’ Black
- No-one noticed the Pearl Black/Black switchup until 2023, when someone told me about the Rahkshi head thing and realised that Pearl Black couldn’t have been used for Icarax aaaand here we are
TL;DR I went down a rabbithole one day and broke almost everyone’s mask displays :) If you want to buy an Icarax with the right mask, hit me up :P
Links to the shop and stuff on the page proper, as always! Bonus pic of Floof casually photobombing the pics with Icarax.
