Chestnuts from the Red Country House

Wet weather = limited chestnut gathering. I do have 10kg of fresh chestnuts ready to go out today, if anyone is hoping to make anything extra special for their Easter menu. I have 1 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg bags.

Fine weather again, slowly catching up on nut orders. Thank You to people who message me their requests. I will be popping the roadside stall back out very soon. The wet weather has meant the driveway has some interesting fungi popping up here and there. If anyone knows where I could find porchini or birch bolete mushrooms I would love to introduce some to the chestnut paddock in the hope they will spread.

Hooray for waking up to Sunshine this morning. Clear blue skies mean we should get back in the chestnut paddock this afternoon and start catching up on all your orders.

Oh my! The chestnuts are huge this year! $10 kg for these big beauties. Lots ready now and should have a good supply up until early May.

The Chestnut stall is out at the roadside today - Lawford rd. Our neighbours Sherlin Alpacas are having an open day today. Visit them for Free Alpaca hugs today - Sat and Sunday. Their alpaca giftshop is also open.

Cooler evenings, mean the opportunity to make evening snacks on top of the woodburner. I peel the chestnuts with my Japanese chestnut peeler and pop them in a cake pan on top of the woodburner.they are ready to eat when they are soft ( like cooked potato) but wait until they are not too toasty hot!

Another gorgeous blue sky Canterbury morning, and we have been out picking up chestnuts after the very blustery wind yesterday. This year we have some extra large nuts, so we’ve sorted the fresh nuts into extra large grade and regular grades. our pet sheep get to eat all the small and split nuts, they literally go nuts for them. Each season we see who can find the biggest nut, todays current winning nut is 38 grams. Chestnuts available by the kilo, please message us or comment to place an order.
