'Mountains to Climb'
100 years of mountaineering in Canterbury, New Zealand
The centenary publication of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, 1925-2025
Edited by John Wilson, Published by The Canterbury Mountaineering Club in 2025
Beyond a regional climbing history, Mountains to Climb describes how the ‘CMC’ has provided a century of leadership, companionship and support for mountaineering and allied recreation and alpine services in New Zealand.
Core chapters trace climbing through eight eras, from Post World-War 1 tramping through transalpine explorations, and ‘imponderable’ face climbs, to the diversity of present-day climbing.
After introducing the Club’s colourful back-story, theme chapters explore remote huts, alpine instruction, search and rescue, map-making, mountain radio services, and more.
Final chapters offer future insights: of impacts of glacial retreat on alpine access; and how clubs may shape and support future alpine endeavours.
This weighty book is illustrated with over 400 B&W and colour illustrations, from past and present.
