I do love a wee bargain and do like to repurpose things so when the two come together it is bliss.
I totally recommend the newest addition to Darfield - The Darfield Op Shop everything is $5 unless priced and some beautiful wee treasures to be found. Today’s find was this delicate glass compote and I just could see the colour enhancing the winter roses and daphane which are coming into abundance.

Day 31 - Last Day of the Floral Challenge.

Well if you feel you haven’t seen an arrangement from me for a couple of days you are correct.
Had a wee accident while pruning which derailed my progress, nothing to serious a cut to my eye.
So my final post is my living arrangement from a couple of years back.
But do keep a watch out for will be releasing my Spring Subscription details in the next few days for the tulips are budding up and the anemones in the tunnel houses are too!

Day 27 - Of the winter floral challenge.

I challenged myself 27 days ago to celebrate a season I find hard to celebrate. I hate being cold and I like short days even less. I started the challenge to keep me thinking creatively for early in August I am doing a live demonstration for a flower club.

In the last 20 years I have had the pleasure of speaking at conferences, holding hundreds of workshops and been a key note speaker more than once, but nothing has caused me so much nervousness as the thought of doing a floral demonstration in front of a group of talented flower enthusiasts in the middle of winter when flowers are limited!

But in doing this daily practice I am starting to see shapes, forms, colours, textures and styles in places I never have before, it is slowly opening up a part of my brain that has been under utilised.

Today I escaped to one of my top five favourite places in the world. Where the sea thunders and frosts don’t happen. Not a flower in sight, but I did find things to arrange on the beach!

Day 26 - it’s snowing!

I think I jinxed the weather by saying I am sure it’s more Spring like than winter all week! So cold now and snowy flurries have been visiting.
The perfect day to do up some bunches of cheer for my little stand at Johnny Fresh. The best place in Darfield to get you fresh greens and a pop of floral colour.

Day 24 - wiring flowers for a head crown

Can’t show you all of this one, making something very special for an upcoming winter wedding.
I love making fresh flower crowns and this is a first making a dried one, so much more time needed to do it! My fingers definitely know they did some wiring today.
With two more to go I need to stay up late!

Day 23 - sometimes the bees have to land first.

For many flowers the landing of the bee can shorten their vase life. In the middle of summer it’s a daily race to the cosmos to pick before they are open and are pollinated by the bees. For un pollinated cosmos will last for days in a vase while a pollinated head is lucky to last for two.

However in the middle of winter the winter roses are the direct opposite, they need to have a seed head forming before I pick to ensure they last a good five - seven days in a vase.

So some of these are perfect for picking and some are not but that’s okay for this is for my table to bring me joy.

Day 22-it’s getting harder!

Some days I can find inspiration in the tiniest flower and other days…..

Went for a bike ride thinking to clear my head and all I got was jealous, seeing rhododendron and camellias flowering in other peoples gardens and I swear I didn’t think I would ever turn into someone who thought they needed a few rhodos and camellia in their garden but maybe I have!They seem to be the gems of the winter flowers.
So I looked harder and found the first forget me nots out and the honey wort is starting to come into its own.

Day 21- am I cheating?

I was going to go for a wander and pick sone of the lovely violets that have popped up to make today’s arrangement, however I noticed nature had changed yesterdays so much it was like a new arrangement!

Sone flowers are known to bend and grow towards the light, this is called heliotropism. Tulips are well known for this, tuck them tight into a bouquet and the next day they will be inches above all the other flowers. It’s why I love doing bunches of tulips in a vase and watch them change every day. And I saw the first bud on my tulips today so it won’t be long to they are available to purchase.

It seems Calendula has the same traits and definitely not to be used in front facing work! Tucked into a bouquet it won’t be a problem. That is what I love about flowers there is always another quirk to learn about.

So the first photo is now the arrangement looks today and the second is what it looked like it yesterday.

Day 20 - a gloomy one.

There is one flower which it doesn’t matter the season is always flowering in my garden and for many years it was the only one. I treat it like a w**d, pulling it out when I need the space and always knowing that it will be back flowering there shortly. It’s such a beneficial flower for the insects and on a gloomy day always brightens up my day. I will admit I have never picked it before, other than add it to my salad mixes, even though last year it was very much on trend in weddings with a meadow theme. But today I thought I would look at it differently and see what I could do with it.

So here is my Calendula arrangement, it’s beautiful and bright and I love the darker centres in some and teamed with my rocket which has bolted to flower I reckon it can come indoors more often!

I reckon one of the top three things about being a flower farmer florist is delivering flowers to people.

People contact me and ask can you deliver some flowers for many reasons, but the ones I love most are when it friends thinking of friends who might just need a little pick me up.
I really hope when this is found on the front step it brings the love and joy the friend gifting it wanted for you.
And isn’t it simple to just leave in a jar instead of in five layers of plastic! A quick recut before they pop it into their vases and into a cooler part of the house and they will get a good 7 -10 days of joy from that mix.
