Did I mention I had flowers for sale?
The fridge is full of freshly pulled tulips and beautiful little spring bunches. All available from the self service fridge at 1141B Greendale Rd. Just park up the driveway and follow the flower signs.
The rest are off to be delivered.

One of the joys of being a flower farmer is the feedback I get.
I love it when someone 7 days after they have bought flowers reaches out not to tell me they are dead ( yep flowers are designed to die!) but to tell me they may be faded but they are still bringing joy.
And that is because I harvest the flowers just at the right time, in tulip,season that means three times a day they have to be checked. So they can be caught just as the colour comes into the petals. They look so small at that stage but I know they will slowly open to their full gloriousness over the next 7-10 days.
These photos were sent in with a lovely message. It made my day that she was still enjoying them at the final stage.

So fresh flowers straight from the farm will always last longer than from the stupidmarket oops typo super market!

Often people ask me what do I mean by “grown to organic standards?” Well firstly our farm is not a certified organic farm. I went back to Lincoln 11 years ago and attained my level four in organics with that in mind, however the costs of certification always outweighed any benefits to us. Especially when for eight years everything bit of excess produced was not sold but gifted to foodbanks and locals.

So what I mean when I say grown to organic standards , is firstly I know what the standards are and apply them to my property. All inputs are certified and this does cost more from potting mix to pest control options. I also really value the principals of organics as in - Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share and I use these principals to guide me in making the best decisions for the land which sometimes is honestly is not the best decision for the business.

When I trained as a florist I was appalled by the amount of waste generated and so much of it seemed to be just tradition not actually needed and I was sure there had to be a better way. So I decided plastic was not going to come along on my floristry journey . If you buy flowers off me you can ask them to be unwrapped and all my subscription bouquets are. For why wrap something so beautiful and the best thing for the flowers is for them to be unwrapped as soon as possible . All my ties are either jute or recycled silk and you have to be getting married to ask for that!

But more importantly in a world where it seems everything can be attained year round I celebrate being a seasonal florist. I always have a sense of sadness as I say goodbye to a flower that has become the backbone of the current season. Today I picked the last of my hellebores and I know it won’t be to next August that I get to see their beautiful faces again. But the alstroemeria is starting to bud back up and I will welcome it back for its season. Tulips have always really had a six week season but now you can find them from April to November which takes away the magic. But like having tomatoes in the middle of winter, out of season tulips are just not right or the same!

So continuing the theme of actually letting you know about Seeds of Change instead of just helping you Bloom Scroll with photos of beautiful floral displays. Today I am letting you all know what I plan to roll out this season.

Floral Subscriptions - the 1st subscription for the season was a sell out, but now that more and more flowers are coming in I will be releasing more dates shortly. So if you are someone who loves fresh flowers delivered regularly this is the best way to receive them.

Farm Shop - this is the first year I will be running the self service flower fridge. It will be stocked every morning from Wednesday to Sunday. There will be a mix of bunches and prices. Good to go and something for everyone.

Made to Order Bouquets - these always make my heart sing. If you after something special, maybe a colour or a style let me know preferably a few days in advance . I can work to any budget given.

Weddings- I already have five weddings booked and two under my belt for the season. I love working with brides to create the vibe they are after. I do a free consult to help create a vision board and show what is possible at every budget.

PYO Weddings -I understand not every one wants the full on wedding package and I love that many brides want to embrace their own creativity and make their own wedding florals. If this is you Pick You Own is the perfect match.

PYO - if the season rolls out as planned the first PYO will be mid December.

Workshops - just firming up dates, every time I think I have them someone books in another event! But promise there will be workshops this season.

8. Picnic Events - one of the highlights of last season was the valentine picnic. It was a pure joy to see everyone pick their own bouquet and then enjoy a picnic in the special places around the garden. This will be happening again, along with other dates and days.

There is 101 ways to be a flower farmer! And I am quite proud of myself for narrowing it down to just eight!

Was thinking I should start the season by telling you about the six of us here at Seeds of Change who make the flower magic happen. This time last year I had about 500 followers and knew a lot of them, now it seems to go up daily and I realise many of you won’t know the faces behind the hard work.

So in the order of importance here is wee blurb about the six of us.

1. Bluffy the rodent slayer - how has this black beast who has only been in our lives for 10 months gotten to be Chief Executive? I have no idea but she certainly runs the place. Is in charge of quality control and at all times is keeping an eye on the work being done.

2. Trixie Dog - we will never have a four legged pest problem as long as Trixie is around. No rabbit or opossum would be brave enough to cross the boundary lines. And as an organic grower it is nice to know there is one side of pest control under control!

3. Boo Cat - The cat with the magnificent whiskers, his main roll seems to be to test out all cloches to see if their ambient temperature is just right for perfect growth.

4. Flip dog, which I don’t think of as a real dog , pretty sure she is a cat in a dog suit. Her role here seems to be soil tester, making holes to see the soil profile is something she takes quite seriously.

5. Mike the apprentice - I do hope you have made it this far for with out this man who has been by my side for the last 26 years none of the beauty would be possible. His main roll is chief engineer and fixer of everything. He can find a metal solution to any wooden problem I present him with. Though lately he has been taking on his new apprenticeship of learning the difference between a w**d and a flowering plant and finds it frustrating to learn that these two are totally interchangeable depending on where he is looking.

6. Bronwyn - that’s me. My role here is absolutely everything the above five do not do. Which makes for pretty fun days doing whatever I want! And I want to grow beautiful flowers to organic standards , arrange them with style and have some fun doing it.

So that’s the team and tomorrow I will tell you just a wee bit more about how Seeds of Change is planning to roll out this flower season.

Tomorrow the sign will be out at the front gate!
Which means there is flowers. And the brilliant news is I have finally found a flower fridge which fits in my flower carriage so it can be self service !
Loads of beautiful tulips, ranunculus and anemones. Priced from 15$ and if you are wanting something custom reach out.

Spring finally feels like it’s truely sprung!
The ranunculi are finally showing me their beautiful blooms. This year I started a lot from seed. For we are limited to what corns are available in NZ and many of the multi petalled ones are not. So hopefully over the next few years I can get enough corns to make the process easier.
Onto the next row of tulips. I have one bunch of the Avant Garde left and now the beautiful First Step are showing their beautiful delicate pink centres.
Tulips are such a seasonal treat the season for them is short but the delight they provide is huge.

Firstly THANK YOU to you all who supported my plant sale yesterday, it just means the world to small businesses like mine when the community comes and supports us.

There is so much that goes on to get plants to the stage ready for sale, and for those of you who have been following along for a while you know there has been some hiccups this season. So I was pleased to be able to present such high quality seedlings and perennials.

I really hoped that today would be a lovely rainy day so we could put our feet up and enjoy a break, however the snow had different ideas. When I was tipping snow of the cloches for the tenth time I realised I was getting quite jealous of my neighbours who were making awesome snowmen and having a blast, if the laughter was anything to go by! This adulting really is overrated!

But the one flower on this property which just loves the cold is tulips and the Avant Garde beauties have decided it appropriate to all be ready to pull today. And what beauties they are. The longest stem was over 600mm long. Tulips amaze me , they are picked just as the colour is coming into the petals and take a day or two to open fully, but they don’t stop growing when picked. I love a full vase and seeing how they change every single day in height, angle, colour and size.

So if you wanting some Spring Joy reach out and I will do you up a bunch or you will find small bunches at Johnny Fresh around lunch time tomorrow.

Seeds of Change is officially open for the flower season not that I remembers closing from last season🤣.
