“Merino base layers were pretty common, but it was black and a bit of a snoozefest.”

Before starting , Hamish Acland was a pro skier living out of a ski bag and travelling the world.

He loved wool. He just wanted to make a technical merino tee that worked on the mountain, but didn’t look out of place at the pub afterwards.

That simple idea was the start of Mons Royale.

We caught up with Hamish in Wānaka to hear the full story. Watch the full conversation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWrQXXoB9-k

Are you planning to walk Te Araroa during the 2026/27 season?

Bivouac Outdoor is looking for two walkers to support with up to $5,000 worth of gear and expert advice each.

In return, we want you to share the real experience of life on the trail, from preparation and memorable moments to difficult days and honest feedback on how your gear performs over time.

You don’t need a large social following. We’re looking for people who can create engaging photo and video content, share thoughtful gear reviews and help future Te Araroa walkers make more informed decisions.

Applications close 12 October 2026.

What makes a good daypack?

The answer depends on what you’re doing, what you’re carrying and where you’re heading.

A lightweight pack with minimal structure might be perfect for a short, fast mission. Carry more gear on a long day out and you may want a supportive harness and hipbelt. Head into rugged or technical terrain and stability, durability and a closer fit can become more important.

Our latest guide breaks down daypack size, support, fit, features and the different styles suited to outdoor adventures.

A sleeping bag is worth looking after.

A liner is a pretty simple way to do it, especially when you’d much rather wash a liner than your sleeping bag.

Depending on what you choose, it can also add warmth, help manage moisture, or make things a little more comfortable.
